John Barnes is an excellent host for any award ceremony, particularly for any sporting function.
John Barnes began his career at Watford FC, when in 1984 he scored ‘that’ goal at the Maracana stadium that marked his arrival on the world stage. In 1987 John moved to Liverpool where he stayed until 1997 winning the league twice and FA cup twice. In 1997 John moved to Newcastle United to play for his former team mate and manager Kenny Daglish. He retired from playing in 1999 finishing his career at Charlton Athletic having played 79 times for England scoring 11 goals in the process.
During his career, John was voted the football writers player of the year in 1988 and 1990 and PFA Football of the Year in 1988. In 1997 he was awarded his MBE for services to the game.
His relaxed manner and friendly smile won him many friends of the field and he was invited to appear as a guest captain on Question of Sport. This led him into a career in broadcasting and football punditry. John initially worked for ITV as a studio guest and match analyst, but has since joined Channel 5 as the channel’s principle football presenter.
John continues to take an interest in coaching and plays an active role in the Liverpool Legends team.
