About Steve Redgrave

Steve Redgrave is an English rower who captured five gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games from 1984 to 2000. Known as one of Britain’s greatest sporting personalities, Redgrave has also won nine gold medals, two silvers and a bronze at the Rowing World Championships over a span of nine years. His record of 14 total Olympic and World Championship gold medals is unsurpassed by any other rower in history.

Overcoming Adveristy

Throughout his career, Steve Redgrave was plagued with several serious injuries and illnesses. In 1992 he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and in late 1997, diabetes. Under careful supervision, he was able to train through such obstacles and today is heavily involved in charity work through the Steve Redgrave Fund.

Awards and Accolades

Steve Redgrave was awarded the MBE in the New Year's Honors List in 1987 and the CBE in the New Year's Honors List of 1997. Following his success in Sydney, he was awarded a Knighthood in the 2001 New Years Honors List. The University of Durham awarded him an Honorary Degree in December of 1996 and in 2000 he was named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.

Away From Sport

Since retirement in 2000, Redgrave has been involved in numerous commercial and charitable projects. In addition to maintaining a busy schedule as an after-dinner and motivational speaker, he is currently working with high profile brands such as Jaguar and the BBC and is also actively involved with companies such as Ultralase, Brand Rapport and Gleeds.

In his first book, You Can Win at Life, Redgrave outlines his strategies for reaching the top and demonstrates how such theories can be utilized in everyday life situations. His previous books include A Golden Age and The Complete Book of Rowing. Redgrave recently released his fourth book, Inspired, which includes a number of personal stories from the sporting world that have influenced his career and life, in October 2009.

They aim to raise £100,000 for the Steve Redgrave Fund and Sport Relief.
Sir Steve Redgrave appointed as the government's '2012 Sports Champion'
21st October 2009Five-time olympic gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave has been recruited by the Government to boost sports participation in the build up to London 2012. Britain's most successful olympian will become a member or a new legacy delivery board. As a "2012 Sports Champion," the former rower will oversee efforts to ensure youngsters do five hours of sport a week inside and outside school, and that one million adults are active. "2012 is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to change the habits of a nation and get across to everyone why sport and physical activity matters," Steve said. "I won't be afraid to ruffle feathers if I need to."
Southeastern trains to be named after top British athletes
25th September 2009Train operator Southeastern has renamed 12 of its high-speed trains after British Olympic and Paralympic medallists, including Sebastian Coe, Daley Thompson and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson. The rebranding, an unofficial association with London 2012, also sees trains named after Dame Kelly Holmes, Steve Backley, Sir Steve Redgrave, Rebecca Adlington, Sir Chris Hoy, Ben Ainslie, Duncan Goodhew, Katherine Grainger and Jamie Staff. The trains were unveiled at a special ceremony in Ashford by Jamie Staff, a member of the British cycling sprint team that won the gold medal at last year's Olympics in Beijing, under the banner of "Britain's Fastest" for 12 of Southestern's new javelin trains.

Young Sports Personality of the Year - the final three named
27th November 2009Tom Daley, Jodie Williams and Heather Watson will battle it out for the title of Young Sports Personality of the Year. World diving champion Tom Daley, double world youth sprint gold medallist Jodie Williams and girls' junior US Open winner Heather Watson were chosen from a shortlist of 10. The 2008 award was won by swimmer Eleanor Simmonds, who won two gold medals at the Paralympics in Beijing. The three finalists were chosen by a panel chaired by John Inverdale. The panel members included Jake Humphrey, Helen Skelton, Ore Oduba, and previous Young Sports Personality of the Year winners Kate Haywood and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. The winner will be announced live on the Sports Personality of the Year show on Sunday 13 December 2009.
