The Economist’s political editor and Bagehot columnist, Andrew Miller has an intimate knowledge of the political landscape of the UK and a wonderful insight into the political and economical situation across the world. He is an interesting and dynamic conference keynote and after dinner speaker.
Andrew studied literature at Cambridge before winning a fellowship to Princeton, where he began his journalistic career writing travel pieces about America.
Returning to London, he worked as a television producer with Jonathan Dimbleby before joining The Economist in 2000 to write about British politics and culture.
He covered health, education, asylum and other aspects of public policy before becoming international security editor in 2002. He then wrote about terrorism and defence issues, visiting Iraq and Afghanistan. He moved to Moscow to be The Economist’s bureau chief in Russia in 2004; from Moscow he also covered Ukraine's "orange revolution" and the Caucasus. In 2007 he became the magazine's political editor and author of its Bagehot column.
The Bagehot column is a weekly column in the Economist providing a commentary on current affairs in the UK. Previous writers of this influential column include Andrew Marr and Simon Jenkins. The Economist is the world’s premiere current-affairs weekly, with a global circulation of roughly 1.4m.
Andrew's journalism has been shortlisted three times for the prestigious David Watt prize. His first book, The Earl of Petticoat Lane - a family history about love, friendship, memory, immigration, class, the Blitz and the underwear industry - was published by Random House in 2006. Shortlisted for the 2007 Wingate prize, it was described by Linda Grant in the New Statesman as "a fantastically interesting and well-written story", by Jonathan Freedland as "exquisite".
Andrew is an erudite and insightful speaker, ideally suited for both keynote and after dinner engagements. He can speak on a number of different topics drawing on his experiences of the political and economic landscape both in the UK and abroad.
