Sir Trevor McDonald wins Top Newcaster at Tric Awards

Sir Trevor MacDonald was crowned Newscaster of the Year at the Televsion and Radio Industry Club Awards. The industry body, which promotes excellence in broacdcasting, gave the award to Sir Trevor for his brief comeback last year as co host of the News at Ten on ITV1.

Eamonn Holmes, the presenter of the Sunrise edition of Sky News, was named best digital television personality, beating BSkyB colleague Jeff Stelling, host of Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports.

The BBC's coverage of the Olympic Games in Beijing last summer won the award for high-definition programme of the year. The corporation sent more than 400 staff to cover the Games, and reported a surge in web traffic as a result of its multi-platform coverage.

The prize for sports presenter of the year went to former England striker Gary Lineker. It was a category dominated by the BBC, with Adrian Chiles and Clare Balding also shortlisted.

The TRIC awards, now in their 40th year, are judged by representatives from the TV and radio industry.

Christine Bleakley was in tears this morning as she completed her daunting bid to waterski across the world's busiest shipping lane. Despite falling eight times into the 4C freezing sea, she made it across 22 miles of choppy ocean in just one hour 40 minutes. Setting off for the French coast at 7.46am, The One Show presenter was good spirits supported by her co-host Adrian Chiles. Christine was determined to complete her challenge whatever the weather after raising thousands of pounds for Sport Relief.
