Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking all start?

Roger Black: My speaking career began on the back of my 1996 Olympic success.

Speakers Corner: What was your most recent speaking engagement?

Roger Black: My most recent speech was to Financial and Mortgage Advisers – I covered the need to think differently to be the best, to offer them inspiration by recounting the highs (& lows) of my athletic career. Give them something to take away and apply to their profession.

Speakers Corner: Which event has been your favourite and why?

Roger Black: I especially enjoy events with a multi-national audience – it’s very satisfying, as by the end of the hour you can make a connection with people who don’t necessarily know you.

Speakers Corner: If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Roger Black: To speak at an event for young entrepreneurs would be great and hope that my words could help create success and many jobs.

Speakers Corner: Who would you most like to share a platform with?

Roger Black: I would like to share the platform with Kriss Akabusi, Steve Backley and a potential 2012 Olympic Medallist, like Jessica Ennis.

Speakers Corner: On average, how many times a year do you speak at corporate events?

Roger Black: I’ve been speaking for more than 10 years now, so an average would be about 70 speeches per year. I think my best year was 98 speeches.

Speakers Corner: Are you as happy speaking to 50 as to 1,000 people?

Roger Black: Any size audience is fine.

Speakers Corner: How do you like to be introduced?

Roger Black: I am usually introduced as one of the UK’s most popular Olympic athletes and a television celebrity.

Speakers Corner: Do you always like to do a briefing call before the event?

Roger Black: I always hold a briefing call with the client before an event to get a feel for the theme, as I can tailor my presentation to the client’s requirements.

Speakers Corner: What are the most asked for topics?

Roger Black: Most common topics are motivation, teamwork, goal setting and change management.

Speakers Corner: Do you have any funny/embarrassing speaking anecdotes you care to share?

Roger Black: We lost all the lights for a short time whilst I was presenting – to this day I cannot remember what I said but afterwards, backstage, Sir David Frost told me he couldn’t have done any better, so I guess it was ok!

Speakers Corner: Your favourite film?

Roger Black: My favourite film is The Princess Bride and favourite book is Where the Wild Things Are.

Speakers Corner: Favourite holiday destination?

Roger Black: We love taking holidays in the West Country – especially St Mawes.

Speakers Corner: Country or townie?

Roger Black: I’ve lived in both town and country but lean towards country now.
