Norman Lamont Biography

Norman Lamont - keynote speaker, economics, finance, politics
Topics:
  • Finance & Economics
  • Politics

Lord Norman Lamont is an excellent keynote speaker and is much in demand on the corporate circuit. He was at the centre of British politics for many years. He was made a Life Peer in July 1998 and has been a strong vocal opponent of further European Integration and Britain joining the Euro.

Working Peer

As well as being a working Peer and co-Chairman of the Eurosceptic Bruges Group, Lord Lamont has been a director of, and a consultant to, a number of companies in the financial sector including RAB Capital (hedge fund company), Scottish Re (a re-investment company quoted on the New York Stock Exchange), Balli plc ( commodities trading house), and Rotch property. He was appointed as Chairman of the East European Food Fund and has been a director of a number of investment funds. In 2007 Lord Lamont was made an Honourary Patron at the Oxford University History Society, and in 2008 was appointed as as a non-executive director at the internet company Phorm - specialising in online behavioural advertising.

Early Career

Prior to becoming an MP, Norman Lamont was a Merchant Banker with NM Rothschild and Sons, whom he joined after reading Economics at Cambridge.

Lord Lamont in Politics

He was a Cabinet Minister under both Margaret Thatcher and John Major, a member of the House of Commons for twenty-five years and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1990-9993 during the difficult recession of the time and Britain's exit from the ERM on "Black Wednesday".   He was heavily involved in the Thatcher reforms including privatisation that transformed the British economy. He was a Minister also in the Departments of Energy, Defence and Industry.

Lord Norman Lamont as Chancellor

As Chancellor, he introduced three budgets. He inherited the policy of membership of the ERM, which made it a difficult and controversial time to be Chancellor.  Despite all the many criticisms at the time, today economists have praised the regime of inflation targeting and the fiscal tightening he put in place after Britain’s exit from the ERM. Sir Alan Walters, economic advisor to Lady Thatcher and Bernard Connolly, in a letter to the Times described Lord Lamont in his “post ERM phase…to be not only the most effective but also the bravest Chancellor since the war”.

A study by Ruth Lea at the Centre for Policy Studies, “Whatever happened to the Golden Legacy?” concluded that the low inflation and economic stability that developed after his time in office were based on Lord Lamont's reforms.

Lord Norman Lamont as Author

In 1998 Norman Lamont published a self-deprecating and amusing account of his time as Chancellor under the title In Office. His book was described in the Independent newspaper as “Out of the top drawer of political memoirs”.

Need Help Finding a Speaker?

Client Comments

Michael Goldhill was extremely helpful and went out of his way to find a speaker who suited our event. Good choice given to us, I think we should have taken the risk and gone with someone we had never used before rather than using somone we had to be safe (albeit he was very good).
