Medicine & Comedy

Phil qualified as a GP in 1991 and, after 10 years, switched to sexual health medicine. In 2002, Phil fronted “28 Minutes to Save the NHS” on Radio 4, which he extended to a sell out Edinburgh Fringe Show, “59 Minutes to Save the NHS”. This was further extended  to a highly successful 60-date UK tour “89 Minutes to Save the NHS”. Phil has co-written a BBC 1 sitcom, “Doctors and Nurses” about the rivalry between two orthopaedic surgeons on the Isle of Wight.

Phil presented five series of "Trust Me, I’m a Doctor" on BBC2 and his book of the same name is a best seller. He has appeared on "The News Quiz" (Radio 4) and "Have I Got News For You" (Hat Trick for BBC). He has written Private Eye’s medical column, ‘Doing the Rounds’ since 1992 and broke the  story of the Bristol heart scandal. He gave evidence at the subsequent Public Inquiry.

Awards

He has been twice selectd for the Perrier Pick of the Fringe at the Edinburgh festival and won writers' Guild and silver Sony Awards for their Radio 4 series.

Reviews

“Phil Hammond - as brilliant a polemic as I have ever seen”
The Guardian

“A tremendous show. Sceptical, irreverent, very funny and like a mighty
gust of fresh air in a field that’s bedevilled with cover-ups and cloaked in
 a vow of silence”

Time Out

“The greatest genuine scandal of the fringe. Phil Hammond generates dozens of laughs and more ire than any amount of tentative taboo-breaching uncovered elsewhere”
The Financial Times

“Assured, witty and profane, Phil Hammond advises against the traditional
blind trust in NHS staff, gleefully turning over every sacred cow from practitioners to politicians and sharing some delightful clap clinic anecdotes.”
The List

“Sharp intelligent commentary woven through ruthlessly funny anecdotes”
The Big Issue
