Geoff Burch Biography

Geoff Burch - conference, keynote and motivational speaker
Topics:
  • Business
  • Marketing & Branding
  • Motivation & Teamwork
  • Sales/Customer Service

Geoff Burch is an exciting and energetic business speaker and keynote.  On almost any business subject, Geoff can thrill, challenge and amuse.  What he does is hard to describe, some people call him a motivator, others an alternative business guru, but when he is firing on all cylinders in front of a business audience, he is hard to beat.  On one hand he is very funny, but beneath his acerbic sense of humour and his wonderful, lampooning variety of absurd characterisations, lies a strong and unforgettable business message.

Geoff Burch as a Business Guru

Geoff Burch is possibly the most original business "guru" in the UK. He is extremely flexible, and in a business that seems to be dominated by acronyms and mnemonics, Geoff takes us in a different direction and provides, as his impressive client base will testify, a very high level of excitement and delight.

Geoff can speak amusingly on almost any business topic, and can deliver challenging presentations on subjects such as: Customer Relationships, Change, Innovation, People Motivation, Sales, Working Together, Empowerment, and How Everyone Can Deliver the Vision. All of these are presented in a hilarious, thought-provoking, and memorable way where even apparently the dullest business subject is turned into an exciting roller coaster ride that leaves the audience thrilled and convinced.

Geoff will fire any team from senior directors, a gathering of international business people, to mass gatherings of ground floor and front line staff with his enthusiasm for the subject, in a way only a true fanatical genius can.   You could fill a room with a cross-section of people from a part-time cleaner to the Chief Executive of an international company, and everybody would come away with new ideas. Geoff looks at every conceivable area of business, and is renowned for taking a sideways look at the latest business fads and fashions - translating the ones of value into a memorable message that everyone can understand.

Author & Broadcaster

Geoff’s day job as he calls it, is writing, broadcasting, consultancy and occasional training to very select groups.  He has written many books including 'Resistance Is Useless: The Art of Business Persuasion' and 'The Writing on the Wall: The Campaign for Commonsense Business'.

Keynote Speaking

Maybe you would like that grand finale Keynote Speech, where Geoff has been known to blast on to the stage riding on a huge motorcycle, and regale your audience with wild, hilarious stories and characterisations that all have an unforgettably strong business message.  Or maybe you would like the thoughtful Geoff, that, while still hilarious, puts across the precise messages that concern your organisation.  Having seen Geoff, people often ask for a similar presentation for their own event, but it can be worth remembering his broad repertoire, which allows him to be invited back time after time with different messages and stories, although you and the audience will no doubt still want Geoff to repeat some of the favourites.  After all you would be disappointed if ‘Old Blue Eyes’ didn’t sing ‘Do it his way’, and you would feel the same if Geoff didn’t recount the saga of ‘The Shrub Boys’

After Dinner Speaker

Geoff Burch is a consummate After Dinner Speaker, where he has an opportunity to really turn up his funny wick, but those powerful messages are still there, and his talents are particularly suited to business audiences who want to thoroughly enjoy themselves, but at the end of the event, take something useful away.

Training & Consultancy

Geoff’s favourite saying which he pinched from John Cleese is “You don’t have to be sombre to be serious” and make no mistake, Geoff is very serious about his subject.  In fact he has the passion of a true fanatic about the rewards that can be brought about by a change in attitude.  Geoff always welcomes with genuine excitement, the opportunity to help change those attitudes in your team, by offering his services as a consultant and trainer.

Getting the Best

The important thing for Geoff is that he has the opportunity to get it right and do everything possible to make your event the great success that you want it to be.  He will require briefing materials in good time, so that he can customise his speech for the event.  Meticulous in preparing his presentation, Geoff will study the profile of the audience, the market in which they work, the competition they face, and how to exploit the advantages they have. He then combines this specific information with his generic approach to any situation. His power to make any organisation believe in itself and to establish and maintain the motivation to succeed, is central to his presentation.  He will also liaise with the production people regarding the sound and lighting and especially when using the bike, which does require a little extra planning and staging.

Clients

His slightly unconventional image and extensive use of humour should not hide the fact that he has a powerful business message, which can benefit absolutely any client-focused organisation. His credentials are impressive having worked with the likes of BT, Barclays, Lloyds, the CBI, Consumers' Association, Prudential, Phillips, ABTA and numerous other companies to present, motivate and train.

Travelling both internationally and throughout the UK, Geoff Burch is in great demand and is loved by major blue chip companies for his outrageous, hilarious, thought provoking and most certainly unforgettable presentations.

Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking all start?

Geoff Burch: About 25 years ago, a large corporate client for whom we were doing consultancy work, asked if I could do a ‘pep talk’ to the people booking exhibition stands from them.

Speakers Corner: Can you remember your first speaking engagement?

Geoff Burch: My first paid speaking engagement – I don’t think I will every forget it. It came from my first ever speaking agent, the famous Barbara Kelly (wife of Bernard Braden), and it was described as an employers’ conference, so I boned up on all my best high level management stories to arrive at the south coast to discover that the audience was 500 binmen and road sweepers and so some hasty re-writing went on in the half hour before my presentation. Talk about a baptism of fire!

Speakers Corner: And your last event?

Geoff Burch: My most recent event was yesterday, and that was for a huge international pharmaceuticals company

Speakers Corner: Which event has been your favourite and why?

Geoff Burch: There have been so many that we have thoroughly enjoyed – in fact we enjoy 99% of our speaking engagements, but I must say that we love it when we travel to the USA as you get such a buzz from a big American audience. (One time, 20,000 people in Las Vegas)

Speakers Corner: If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Geoff Burch: I am very happy to speak at any event!

Speakers Corner: Who would you most like to share a platform with?

Geoff Burch: Tom Peters, I think, which we have done before and are going to again very soon.

Speakers Corner: On average, how many times a year do you speak at corporate events?

Geoff Burch: We are asked to do roughly about 100 corporate events per year – but Geoff’s television and writing commitments do tend to restrict this a bit sometimes.

Speakers Corner: Do you use powerpoint?

Geoff Burch: Never!

Speakers Corner: Are you as happy speaking to 50 as to 1,000 people?

Geoff Burch: Yes we are – but the bigger the audience the more fun we can have.

Speakers Corner: How do you like to be introduced?

Geoff Burch: We can supply the client with an Introduction just to guide them but are quite happy if they prefer to create their own – particularly if their event has a theme.

Speakers Corner: Do you always like to do a briefing call before the event?

Geoff Burch: A briefing call is essential because we always custom-build the presentations to the client’s requirements. None of our presentations are stock ones, and we always like to fit in as closely as possible with the client and their themes.

Speakers Corner: What are the most asked for topics?

Geoff Burch: Sales, Customers, Leadership, and Change, but in this current climate, there is a very heavy demand from people to increase their sales in these straitened times.

Speakers Corner: Is your speech at all interactive with audience participation?

Geoff Burch: It is as much as possible depending on the size of the audience.

Speakers Corner: Do you have any funny/embarrassing speaking anecdotes you care to share?

Geoff Burch: I always like to arrive at a job in very good time and I arrived at a huge conference venue to be met by a very red-faced and agitated man who asked me if I was the motivational speaker, to which I said yes, and he said “You’re on in a moment”, clipped a mic on me and I strode off into the lights to let the audience have it. As I tried to guage their reaction, I saw their eyes fixed on me and their mouths agape. I had clearly got them, body and soul, and was provoking them to think. What I was provoking them to think was, “Who the hell is that?” as I was actually speaking in completely the wrong conference and was supposed to be in the seminar hall two doors down, an hour and a half later. I got great feedback, but no fee! I then went on to do my proper presentation at the correct time in the correct room.

Speakers Corner: Your favourite film?

Geoff Burch: Harold and Maude

Speakers Corner: Favourite book?

Geoff Burch: Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy

Speakers Corner: Favourite holiday destination

Geoff Burch: So many – Mexico, Far East, Majorca – anywhere hot and sunny where I can also sail

Speakers Corner: What’s your tipple?

Geoff Burch: Coca Cola!

Speakers Corner: Country or townie?

Geoff Burch: Townie, I think. I live in Cheltenham though which is in the heart of the Cotswolds so beautiful countryside – but I get agrophobia if the sky’s too big!
