On wednesday evening some of the UK's leading female figures in business, sport, literature, fashion and the arts joined the wives of the G20 leaders for a summit spouses' dinner.

US First Lady Michelle Obama was seated between Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes at the Downing Street bash. Dame Kelly described Michelle as "really warm, open and honest" and said that she had joked about not wanting to sit next to the Olympic star because she had such toned biceps.

Other guests included Ruth Jones, star and writer of the hit BBC comedy drama Gavin & Stacey, supermodel Naomi Campbell, Martha Lane Fox, the 36-year-old founder of the travel website lastminute.com, Dame Tanni Grey-Thomson, the Paralympic gold medalist, Gurinder Chadha, the film director whose movies include Bend It Like Beckham, and Emma Freud, the broadcaster and wife of the film director Richard Curtis.

Harriet Harman, Gail Rebuck, Chief Executive of Random House Publishers, and Jasvinder Sanghera, campaigner against forced marriage were also in attendance.

The menu, which was also served at the Gordon Brown hosted dinner in another Downing Street dining room, was prepared by chef Jamie Oliver and featured seasonal produce, including Welsh lamb, Jersey Royal new potatoes and asparagus. Jamie said on his blog yesterday that the dinner went "really well" and thet he was "buzzing" from meeting Barack Obama. He added "I was well chuffed with the food and we worked out that if you were to serve the whole three courses at home then it would come in around £11 a head."

"As always Speakers Corner has never let me down. Each recommendation proving to exceed all previous, but this year is a hard act to follow - Rod Woodward and John Simonett were exceptional"
