Often described as "the master of timing", Alan Cleary is a brilliant, very clean after dinner speaker who draws on his upbringing in Liverpool and his subsequent extraordinary career as an international entrepreneur. He personalises his material to suit each event and his style can best be described as topical, punchy, sharp and satirical.
Alan has been actively involved in Loss Adjusting for over 20 years and is currently a Commissioner with the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva, responsible for the settlement of corporate claims arising from the Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait.
After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in modern languages, he chose to pursue a career in insurance rather than industry. After spending some time with General Accident and Royal Exchange Assurance, he joined Thomas Howell Selfe Group and was appointed Managing Director of Thomas Howell Selfe (Southern) Ltd and, in 1985, became Group Managing Director and Deputy Chairman of the Thomas Howell Group of Companies.
In 1990 he temporarily retired from loss adjusting to take over as Group Chief Executive of Merrett Holdings plc and was appointed a Non-Executive Director of Claim Experts Ltd. in 1998. Alan is a past president of the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters; past president of the Chartered Insurance Institute; a past Chairman of the Institute of Risk Management and was the first Chairman of the Society of Fellows. In 1981 he was appointed a freeman of the City of London.
Alan Cleary is one of the most sought-after and highly-rated humorous speakers on the after-dinner circuit today, having entertained audiences at corporate events, sporting occasions and association dinners worldwide.
He has spoken at almost every major UK venue and knows the after-dinner circuit inside out, being equally at home with law societies, golf clubs, client dinners and all-female gatherings.
