Theo Paphitis was born in Limassol, Cyprus in 1959. His father and grandparents worked for British bases in Cyprus enabling them to emigrate to England as a family when Theo was six years old. Theo's reputation is founded in turning around ailing companies, as a conference or keynote speaker he speaks candidly about business turnaround.

In the Beginning

Theo started his career at the age of 16 as a tea boy/filing clerk with Lloyds of London insurance brokers before making his first foray into retail at the age of 18. At the age of 20 he moved into finance -property and corporate, specialisingin turnarounds, setting up his own company at the age of 23.

Turning Around Ailing Companies

In the following years he purchased and turned around ailing companies like Movie Media Sports, Ryman the Stationer, Contessa and La Senzalingerie chains, and Partners the Stationer. He has turned these companies into successful, solid and profitable retail businesses.

During this time, he spent eight years as Chairman of Milwall FC, taking it out of administration, into the Championship and to the FA Cup Final. He was also a Director of the Football League and an FA Councillor. This has been followed by his appearance as a Dragon on the successful BBC TV series, Dragons' Den and his most recent acquisition -experience company, Red Letter Days.

Theo lives in Surrey with his wife. He has five children and two grandchildren.

An electric plug which can be folded flat has beaten 90 international entries to win the Brit Insurance Design of the Year award. Min-Kyu Choi, from London's Royal College of Art, hit upon the idea after having to carry around a bulky conventional plug to charge his laptop.

This weekend the Altitude Festival kicks off in the alpine ski resort of Meribel in France. The week long festival is packed with hilarious comedy talent performing in a skiiers paradise. The festival is organised by comedians Marcus Brigstocke and Andrew Maxwell who aim to make the whole festival carbon neutral and raise awareness of global warning. This year Al Murray, Rufus Hound, 4 Poofs & a Piano and Rich Hall will be performing.
