Dan Germain works at a company called innocent, a nice little place where they make smoothies and other healthy drinks. He tells the story of how they came to be one of the top three fastest growing companies in the UK. It’s a story that involves entrepreneurial ability, innovation, creativity, original marketing and fruit by the bucketload!

Head of Creative

Dan has worked at innocent since the company started and is the company’s Head of Creative.  These days his duties include overseeing all advertising and creative tasks, from the web to books and packaging to advertising. He endeavours to make sure that the innocent brand grows up to be big and strong, as well as still finding time to draw rubbish pictures for the front of the smoothie labels.

His greatest achievement, apart from once growing a big beard, is helping to create the brand, tone and bad jokes that people have come to associate with innocent.

Corporate Events and Public Speaking

Dan focuses on specific areas, such as the key to effective marketing; how to get noticed without spending a lot; how to start your own business; building a brand from nothing; and innovation and creativity on a tight budget.

Clients include Orange, Unilever, O2, BBC, Shell, Interbrew, Cancer Research UK, Ogilvy and Mather, Creative Review, Five TV, Lever Faberge, Coors, EMAP, ?WhatIf!, Marketing Week, D&AD.

Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking all start?

Dan Germain: People seemed interested in the story of how we started our business, and how we created a brand from nothing. So we started telling people.

Speakers Corner: Can you remember your first speaking engagement?

Dan Germain: I think it was to some people at Shell, after we had won a prize for being smart entrepreneurs. About 70 people. I was about as nervous as is possible.

Speakers Corner: And your last event?

Dan Germain: I spoke at an annual sales/marketing get together for O2 in a fancy hotel in a forest. Not as nervous these days.

Speakers Corner: Which event has been your favourite and why?

Dan Germain: A trip to Madrid to talk to O2 was good. A few events in Paris talking to about 2000 sixth form students at the Palais des Congres – that’s always a good one. And speaking at Little Big Voice, organised by a company called howies in some tents in west Wales. That was the one where I think I had most fun, just saying what I really think of business and how it can be a force for good.

Speakers Corner: If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Dan Germain: My funeral. Would be good to cheer everyone up a bit.

Speakers Corner: Who would you most like to share a platform with?

Dan Germain: Bill Clinton. I sense that he has some sort of weird, unavoidable charisma. Would be good to see/feel it in the flesh.

Speakers Corner: On average, how many times a year do you speak at corporate events

Dan Germain: Probably 6 or 7.

Speakers Corner: Do you use powerpoint?

Dan Germain: Yes, but I use pictures instead of words.

Speakers Corner: How do you like to be introduced?

Dan Germain: Dan, creative director at innocent

Speakers Corner: Do you always like to do a briefing call before the event?

Dan Germain: It helps. Not always necessary but usually helpful

Speakers Corner: What are the most asked for topics?

Dan Germain: Creating a strong culture within an organization; building a brand from nothing; looking after customers in a unique, exemplary way; how you don’t have to spend loads to get noticed; creating a tone of voice for a brand.

Speakers Corner: Is your speech at all interactive with audience participation?

Dan Germain: In places. Sometimes it can be very interactive – depends what people want and how many people there are.

Speakers Corner: Do you have any funny/embarrassing speaking anecdotes you care to share?

Dan Germain: Not really. I do everything in my power to avoid having any of those. I get there early, do my homework and behave myself.

Speakers Corner: Your favourite film?

Dan Germain: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Speakers Corner: Favourite book?

Dan Germain: East of Eden

Speakers Corner: Favourite holiday destination?

Dan Germain: Devon with the kids

Speakers Corner: What’s your tipple?

Dan Germain: Having a booze-free year, to see what it’s like.

Speakers Corner: Country or townie?

Dan Germain: Country dweller these days (near Oxford)
