A new book 'Challenge for Africa' by international speaker Wangari Maathai

18th June 2009

Wangari Matthai is the 2004 Nobel Peace Lauriate, international campaigner and speaker, and founder of the Green Belt Movement.  In her new book The Challenge for Africa: A New Vision she embarks on a journey of re-discovery of the wealth of Africa - its people and culture, and flora and fauna, and calls for a moral revolution from Africans themselves.

Wangari argues that Africans need to revive their sense of identity, their rich cultural inheritance, and work together with a shared sense of common purpose to face the challenges posed by endemic corruption, the legacies of colonialism and the Cold and civil wars, poverty, and climate change.

She explores the deep psychological impact of cultural dislocation felt by many Africans, the complex and dynamic nature of the continent, before coming up with 'hardheaded hope' and 'realistic options' for change and improvement.

The The Challenge for Africa: A New Vision is published today by Pantheon Books
