Sir Jonathon Porritt is Programme Director of Forum for the Future and Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission.  He is an eminent speaker and chief advisor to the government on sustainability.

Forum for the Future

Jonathon Porritt, Co-Founder and Programme Director of Forum for the Future, is an eminent writer, broadcaster and commentator on sustainable development. Established in 1996, Forum for the Future is now the UK's leading sustainable development charity, with 70 staff and over 100 partner organisations, including some of the world's leading companies.

UK Sustainable Development Commission

Jonathon was appointed by the Prime Minister as Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission in July 2000. This is the Government's principal source of independent advice across the whole sustainable development agenda. In addition, he has been a member of the Board of the South West Regional Development Agency since December 1999, and is Co-Director of The Prince of Wales's Business and Environment Programme which runs Senior Executives' Seminars in Cambridge, Salzburg, South Africa and the USA. In 2005 he became a Non-Executive Director of Wessex Water, and a Trustee of the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy. He is also Vice-President of the Socialist Environment Resources Association (SERA).

Friends of the Earth

He was formerly Director of Friends of the Earth (1984-90); co-chair of the Green Party (1980-83) of which he is still a member; chairman of UNED-UK (1993-96); chairman of Sustainability South West, the South West Round Table for Sustainable Development (1999-2001); a Trustee of WWF UK (1991-2005).

Author

His book, Capitalism As If The World Matters (Earthscan), was published in November 2005.

CBE

Jonathon received a CBE in January 2000 for services to environmental protection and is chairman of Forum for the Future.

16th October 2009The findings of the Catlins Arctic Survey analysed by Cambridge University and the WWF have shown that the Arctic is melting at such a rate that it could be almost ice free within 10 years. The results of the expedition will be presented to a UN meeting in Copenhagen in December as further evidence that the world must reduce carbon emissions in order to prevent the Arctic melting at an even faster rate. Pen's expedition last winter, was blighted by technical problems, and after the high tech radar equipment to measure the ice thickness failed after the first few days, they were forced to continue with a simple ice drill.

31st July 2009Host of Grand Designs and sought after keynote speaker Kevin McCloud has put in a planning application to build a development of environmentally aware housing in Swindon. The 42 properties will meet the testing Level 4 for sustainable homes, and include eco roofing, rainwater harvesting systems, and communal gardens to promote neighbourliness and a sense of community.
