One of Britain’s most successful jockeys and recent South Pole explorer, a truly great motivational and inspirational speaker Richard Dunwoody MBE, shares the winning attributes of his motivation and driving ambition which earned him the title of Champion of Champions.

Richard Dunwoody - Winning Jockey

Richard Dunwoody was at the forefront of English National Hunt racing in the 80’s and the 90s, winning the Big Three races - the Grand National, the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup.

When Dunwoody hung up his racing silks at the age of 35 due to injury in 1999, he had won a record 1,699 winners and endured 672 falls.  Richard is best known for his partnership with Desert Orchid on whom he won seven races and was awarded the MBE for sporting greatness.

South Pole Expedition

In 2008 Dunwoody together with American explorer Doug Stoup succeeded in pioneering a new route to the Pole, one that had only previously been attempted - unsuccessfully - by Ernest Shackleton in 1914. Both Dunwoody and Stoup lost more than two stones in weight during the expedition.

Motivational Speaker

Audiences learn about the Richard's unyearning drive and ambition, which both led him to the South Pole and intially what made him a household favourite in racing circles at only 21. Richard also speaks about the fear of failure which kept him to the fore for many years - earning him the title Champion of Champions.

Strictly reveals the dancing line up
26th August 2009The curtain has gone up on the star contestants for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing. The famous faces roped in for the next series of the hit show include, boxer Joe Calzaghe, actress Lynda Bellingham, ex-cricketer Phil Tufnell and tennis champion Martina Hingis. Jockey Richard Dunwoody and BBC Breakfast's Chris Hollins are also among the competitors.
Richard Dunwoody announces his next Challenge - to walk 1000 miles in 1000 hours
1st April 2009Ex champion jockey, polar explorer and motivational speaker, Richard Dunwoody MBE, has announced his plans to walk 1000 miles in 1000 hours for 1000 Guineas. this is a challenge dating back 200 years, having first been attempted in 1809 by Captain Barclay for a 1000 Guinea bet. In May, Richard will attempt the challenge to raise money for charity.

The journey began at the summit of Mount Mismi in Peru on April 2, 2008. Mr Stafford's team said he has suffered hundreds of wasp stings and endured an estimated 50,000 mosquito bites. Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking/presenting all start?

Richard Dunwoody: In 2003 I met Graham Davies from Straight Talking. His company wrote a speech for me and the advice I received from him has been invaluable over the past few years.

Speakers Corner: Can you remember your first corporate event?

Richard Dunwoody: One of my earliest was an awards dinner at St Andrews for Jaguar. It seemed to go well, Richard Hammond was hosting it, and I wasn’t booed off the stage t St Andrews for Jaguar.

Richard Dunwoody: Last night at Steam Wine Bar in the City. A 25 min talk on my life as a jockey and 45 min Q&A

Richard Dunwoody: Motivational presentation to 100 Hairdressers at The Grove; fortunately most of them were female!

Richard Dunwoody: Fell off the back of the stage in an old Fulham Broadway nightclub, having given a brief and quite serious presentation for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. I hadn’t been drinking, it was just very dark. It lightened proceedings up a bit anyway
