David Magliano's Involvement in 2018

David Magliano is Director of Commercial and Marketing at England 2018, the organisation bidding for England to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He is responsible for building public support for the bid and for presenting England’s plans to FIFA.

Olympic 2012 and Life Before England 2018

David Magliano’s previous roles include Director of Marketing for London’s successful Olympic bid, where he masterminded the critical final presentation in Singapore immediately before the IOC vote.

Magliano has also been Sales and Marketing Director of two low cost airlines – easyJet and Go (of which he was a founder). His marketing strategies contributed to increasing Go’s value from £100m to £400m in nine months, and at easyJet he was responsible for 400 people, annual revenues of £1billion, and a marketing budget of £60m across 13 European countries.

Before Go, David spent 10 years in advertising. He has been a director of two major advertising agencies.

David Magliano's Experience

Magliano is knowledgeable about a broad range of marketing disciplines – advertising, e-commerce, direct marketing, PR, events, pricing and customer service. In particular he knows how to apply these techniques to win high-stakes pitches.

David has created new brands, and established a number of marketing teams from scratch. He has participated in three start-ups, a management buyout, several rounds of fund-raising, an exit, a merger and a voluntary liquidation.

David has experienced firsthand the work of many high-profile individuals, such as Sebastian Coe, Barbara Cassani, Stelios Haji-Hannou, Martin Sorrell, James Dyson, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Beckham and members of the Royal family.

David is a non-executive Director of Glasses Direct, and a former non-executive director of Dyson. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

David was UK Marketer of the Year in 1999 and 2005, and Global Chief Marketing Officer of the Year in 2006. He was awarded an MBE in 2006.

BSkyB is Britain's most admired company 2009
2nd December 2009Media firm BSkyB landed the top spot in Management Today's Britain's Most Admired Companies awards on monday night. Led by CEO Jeremy Darroch, the organisation is one of the youngest to be handed the accolade, topping each of the nine criteria to secure the award. Matthew Gwyther, editor of Management Today said: 'It (BSkyB) is barely more than a stripling upstart amongst the great names of UK business, some of which have been around for centuries in one form or another. It has shown that a class-leading product, well marketed and slickly delivered, can continue to grow and prosper even in the most challenging circumstances.' Tesco and Johnson Mathey took the second and third slots respectively, with Cadbury, GlaxoSmithKline and Rolls-Royce trailing at numbers four, five and six.

Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking all start?

David Magliano: It started in 1998 when I was a founder of the low cost airline Go. We quickly gained a reputation for outstanding customer service, and people wanted to hear how we did it.

David Magliano: I can for the reason that I was threatened the following day with legal action by easyJet because of some inaccurate remarks I made.
