Rod Woodward Biography

Rod Woodward - Comedian
Topics:
  • Comedy

Rod Woodward is one of the most versatile comedians, and is equally at home with professional, round-table, sports and business audiences, as he is in a cabaret environment, a theatre, a comedy club or even a students' union.

Traditional & Alternative Comedy Mix

Critics rave about Rod Woodward, from Cardiff.   The judges, stars, audiences and newspapers alike love this young and fast-rising comedian.  Winner of the ‘Encore Comedian of The Year’, Rod completed the 110-night sell-out Dark Side Tour of the UK and Ireland with Patrick McGuinness of Phoenix Nights and Road To Nowhere.

He puts his rave reviews down to his act which is a mixture of traditional comedy, alternative and the down right zany – a style that appeals right across the board.

“The comics that are making the big waves in Britain at the moment are the ones who are bridging the gap between alternative and traditional comedy.  I tend not tell too many jokes; it is mainly observations – whimsical stuff with a touch of the surreal.  I have great respect for comedians like Billy Connolly, Frank Skinner, and Ben Elton and I am carrying on that tradition.”

His exceptional delivery and material have attracted the praise of some of the business' most respected names and critics. Tipped for great things, Rod prides himself on the original and topical content of his performances.  Rod's professionalism goes before him - literally. He always tries to be a step ahead by planning each individual performance to suit the occasion, therefore bringing a unique personal touch to his speeches.

Televison & Radio

Rod has written and performed in his own Radio Wales Comedy series, "Doing It For A Laugh" - 3Series.  He has also written and presented the ten-part series, "A Bit Off The Fringe" for BBC2 Wales.  He also appeared as the subject of the BBC documentary, "Am I Talking To You", which followed Rod on his journey to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  He wrote and performed his own one man show for a 25-night run at The Pleasance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, for which he earned the following reviews.

Speakers Corner: How did working in the corporate sector all start?

Rod Woodward: I was speaking at an event in South Wales some ten years ago when a fellow speaker took my details and forwarded me to several after dinner speaking agencies. The rest is Geography

Speakers Corner: Can you remember your first corporate event?

Rod Woodward: It was the Variety Club Annual Ball – proper showbiz!

Speakers Corner: And the last?

Rod Woodward: The Sparkes Charity Annual Golf Dinner at the Chancery Court Hotel, London. They raised 80 grand for charity and the chicken was nice – a great night all round!

Speakers Corner: Which has been your favourite event so far and why?

Rod Woodward: The Long Lunch which kicks off the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament

Speakers Corner: If you could perform at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Rod Woodward: The Royal Variety Show. One would be honoured

Speakers Corner: Which comedian do you most admire?

Rod Woodward: Robin Williams and George Carlin – I have been fortunate to see both live?

Speakers Corner: Who would you most like to share a stage with?

Rod Woodward: Frank Sinatra – the greatest entertainer of all time

Speakers Corner: On average, how many corporates do you do per year?

Rod Woodward: Between 75 and 100

Speakers Corner: Are you as happy performing to 50 as to 1000 people?

Rod Woodward: My only criteria is that the audience is up for a laugh

Speakers Corner: How do you like to be introduced?

Rod Woodward: I like the MC To get perfect order and introduce me with a little energy and enthusiasm

Speakers Corner: Do you have any funny/embarrassing anecdotes you care to share?

Rod Woodward: I often perform in the guise of my alter-ego, Italian comedian Mario De Niro and was recently approached by four Italian waiters (after a speech at the Park Lane Hotel) who wanted to have a chat about my Azzurri roots. Telling them I was a born and bred Welshman was like telling them there was no Santa Claus and I still worry about waking up with a horse’s head on my pillow.

Speakers Corner: Do you normally have dinner with the client before appearing on stage?

Rod Woodward: I am perfectly happy to do this as long as the venue has no environmental health history

Speakers Corner: Have you heard any memorable speakers whilst at any events?

Rod Woodward: Sir Ranulph Fiennes was superb. I remember the tale of an Arctic expedition during which one of his companions lost several fingers to frostbite and began to irritate the great man by “starting to whinge.” Classic.

Speakers Corner: Your favourite film?

Rod Woodward: The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn (1938). Awaiting the Russell Crowe revamp with interest.

Speakers Corner: Favourite book?

Rod Woodward: Crying with Laughter by Bob Monkhouse

Speakers Corner: Favourite holiday destination?

Rod Woodward: Albir, Spain

Speakers Corner: What’s your tipple – wine, beer, champagne?

Rod Woodward: Red wine – I am particularly partial to Ugandan Beaujolais

Speakers Corner: Country or townie?

Rod Woodward: Originally a townie, born and bred in Cardiff, but now very much a country convert living for some six years ago in the rural and slightly incestuous village of Machen
