Jack is known as one of the finest sporting raconteurs and concentrates his time on his many after dinner engagements and television appearances.

Playing Career

Jack signed for Leeds in 1952 and spent 21 years playing centre half for the team.  He won 35 caps for England and played in the World Cup winning side of 1966 alongside his brother Bobby.

Hanging Up His Boots

Jack retired from playing in 1973 to become the manager of Middlesborough from 1973-1977 taking them to the 1974 second division championship.  He then managed Sheffield Wednesday from 1977-83 and Newcastle from 1984-85.

In 1986 Jack became manager of the Republic of Ireland football team.  In 1988 Ireland reached the European Championship finals in Germany and in 1990 the World Cup Finals in Italy, where they were eventually beaten in the quarter finals by the hosts.  Four years later, Jack again took the side to the Finals, this time in America, where they avenged their defeat to Italy by a single goal before losing to Holland in the second round.

Jack was made a Freeman of Dublin in 1994 to honour the credit he had brought to the national side.  In 1995 Jack resigned from his post for the Republic of Ireland.
