Educated at King’s College Canterbury and University College London, David Gower became a professional cricketer in 1975. 

His achievement of scoring 8,231 runs in Test Matches makes David England’s second highest ever runs scorer in Test Match history. His stylish play took him to 18 Test Match Centuries and 32 Tests as Captain of England until his retirement in 1993.
 
An all round sportsman, tennis and skiing are among his other sporting accomplishments.  He has ridden in a British bobsled and returned on several occasions to the Cresta Run. Other interests include photography, music, crosswords, safaris and wildlife conservation.  He is actively involved as a Trustee of the David Shepherd Conservation Foundation and is a patron of SAVE (Australia).   David also enjoys collecting and drinking fine wines.

David is not only an excellent speaker, entertaining his audiences with his laid back humour and fund of anecdotes from his days at the crease and from his extensive travels, but he is delightful company and a joy to work with.

He was awarded an OBE in 1992.

16th December 2009The Telegraph is conducting an online poll to discover what its readers think was the greatest sporting moment of the last decade. Some of Speakers Corner's favourite speakers appear in the top 20 including Sir Steve Redgrave wining a fifth Olympic Gold medal at a fifth consecutive Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, and when Dame Kelly Holmes won the 800 metres and 1,500 metres gold medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Young Sports Personality of the Year - the final three named
27th November 2009Tom Daley, Jodie Williams and Heather Watson will battle it out for the title of Young Sports Personality of the Year. World diving champion Tom Daley, double world youth sprint gold medallist Jodie Williams and girls' junior US Open winner Heather Watson were chosen from a shortlist of 10. The 2008 award was won by swimmer Eleanor Simmonds, who won two gold medals at the Paralympics in Beijing. The three finalists were chosen by a panel chaired by John Inverdale. The panel members included Jake Humphrey, Helen Skelton, Ore Oduba, and previous Young Sports Personality of the Year winners Kate Haywood and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. The winner will be announced live on the Sports Personality of the Year show on Sunday 13 December 2009.

4th November 2009Record-breaking triathlete and Ironman champion Chrissie Wellington has been named Sunday Times sportswoman of the year for 2009. The 32-year-old from Norfolk, who took her third straight Ironman world title last month, won the Sunday Times award after four weeks of online voting. Chrissie, a long-distance triathlon specialist who set a new world record time this year, beat Jessica Ennis, Britain's world heptathlon champion to the title. Cyclist Victoria Pendleton came third behind Chrissie and Jessica.
Chris Hoy Named Sports Personality of the Year
15th December 2008Chris Hoy, who won three gold medals in Beijing, beat Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington to the honour. Chris, 32, becomes the first cyclist to win the prestigious award since Tommy Simpson in 1965.
