Tommy Docherty Biography

Tommy Docherty - After dinner speaker and awards host, sports
Topics:
  • Sport

Tommy Docherty is renowned as one of the most colourful characters in football – the man who often claims to have more clubs than Jack Nicklaus! Nowadays, he is in great demand as a celebrity after dinner speaker at many events from Multinational Company Conference Dinners, to Personal Appearances, Sportsman’s Dinners and Trade and Industry Association Dinners.

Distinguished Career

Tommy Docherty has seen the world in a distinguished career with 12 clubs in 4 different countries and wherever The Doc has gone, his sharp sense of humour has helped him through good times and bad.

As a player Tommy Docherty launched his career with Celtic, made 324 appearances for Preston and then moved further south with Arsenal and Chelsea.  He also won 25 caps for Scotland and when Tom’s playing days were over, he turned to management.  He lent his experience to a long list of clubs – Chelsea, Rotherham, Aston Villa, Oporto, Manchester United, Derby, Queen’s Park Rangers (3 times), Sydney Olympic (twice), Preston and Wolves – with varying degrees of success.

It was under his guidance that Scotland also qualified for the 1974 World Cup finals but perhaps the most memorable success came at Old Trafford, where he created an exciting team which took Manchester United to the Second Division Championship in 1975 and FA Cup glory two years later.

Since retiring from management, the fast-talking, wisecracking Glaswegian is a stalwart of the After-Dinner circuit and is known throughout the country as THE DOC.

If laughter is the best medicine, there’s only one Doc who can prescribe an evening full of fun and entertainment and that' s the one and only Tommy Docherty - great Scottish soccer legend and King of the One Liners.

As the Daily Express said of his one-man show “It had ‘em rolling in the aisles.  Ninety minutes of Tommy Docherty onstage can seriously damage your funny bones!”
