Queen of Shops Mary Portas has taken the world of shoes by storm, with a collection for Clarks that has sparked a waiting list of over 1000 customers.
From Saturday girl at John Lewis to holder of the weighty title of TV’s Queen of Shops, as well as retail advisor to the government and Harvey Nichols, Mary Portas is a fashion force to be reckoned with. And now the feisty consumers' champion is changing the face of the British high street.
Mary has now embarked upon a new challenge: creating a range of shoes for High Street giant Clarks.
As Mary neared her 50th birthday, she became aware of how skewed the British high street is towards youth, with no 'spiritual home' for women over a certain age. And she decided to address the issue.
The collection will be, according to Mary, “designer shoes with a fashion edge, built with Clarks' unquestionable quality and comfort.”
“We honed each detail of the range to make it perfect for every aspect of a woman's lifestyle. We have great shapes - from edgy wedges to elegant courts. While they look super-hot, they are also deceptively comfortable. I defy anyone to say they could find a more comfortable three-inch heel than mine - it's a shoe revolution.”
Clarks have reported a 1000-strong waiting list has sprung up since the launch of the shoes, in particular for the £79.99 scarlet and fuchsia La Magdalane shoe.
Mary says she is elated but unsurprised at the popularity of the collection.
“I was always impressed when Hermes had a waiting list for their Birkin bag,” says Mary.
“But in my first season of designing with Clarks my Magdalene shoe has over a thousand women waiting for them. I know I shouldn’t be surprised because the truth is we’ve created what must be the most comfortable shoe I have ever walked in – mixed with great sexy style.”
