Grin Up North attracts comedy headliners

12th October 2010

MONTH of laughter has got under way in the country’s steel city with crowds and comedians celebrating the return of the Grin Up North Sheffield Comedy Festival for an unprecedented and eagerly anticipated sixth year.

The prestigious event which is taking place throughout October has attracted four out of the five overall winners from this year’s Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

It boasts even more gigs than last year’s which generated close to £6m for the city’s economy.

Comedian and organiser Toby Foster is confident the festival – that saw 62 per cent of its audience come from outside the city in 2009 – will continue to succeed.

“Sheffield has been behind this festival from day one,” he said. “We have had fantastic support this year once again from Creative Sheffield, Sheffield City Council, Travel South Yorkshire and many other organisations who are helping us grow the event year on year.”

Other comedians such as Al Murray, Sean Lock, Sarah Millican, Ross Noble and Jimmy Carr will all take to the stage in what is quickly becoming part of the city’s proud comedy heritage.

The festival takes place in various pubs and clubs across the city and organisers have warned that tickets are selling out fast.

After its arrival and immediate success in 2005 Toby Foster and Scott Barton, who heads The Sheffield Events Company, continued to grow.

Scott Barton said: “Tickets for every single show are selling well and we’re looking forward to another fabulous month.”

“We’re set to have another multi-million pound impact on everything from restaurants to hotel spaces in the city for a full month, as well as massive publicity both regionally and nationally.”

“We’ve worked flat out over the past five years to build the festival into one of the best in the country and it’s really paying off for the city.”

Household names such as Michael McIntyre, Frankie Boyle, Eddie Izzard, Lee Evans, Alistair McGowan and Jo Brand have all appeared to excite audiences in the past.

This year's big names line up include:

Al Murray, Sean Lock, Sarah Millican, Russell Kane, Dara O'Briain, Stewart Lee, Jimmy Carr, Ross Noble, Rich Hall, Rhod Gilbert, John Scott, Josie Long, Christian Reilly, Mitch Benn, Ardal O'Hanlon, Toby Foster, Tommy Tiernan, Stewart Francis, Zoe Lyons, Chris Ramsey,  Andrew Bird, Alun Cochrane, Paul Sinha, Nick Revell, Owen O'Neill, Al Pitcher, Paul Zerdin, Bennett Arron, Isy Suttie, Mick Ferry, Phil Hammond, Robin Ince, Gary Delaney, Jason Cook, Rob Rouse and Greg Davies.
