Alan Hughes is a keynote speaker who focuses on practical business leadership as well as marketing and affective customer service. He has had an impressive career thus far and is well respected in the speaker circuit.

Alan has worked for various big corporations and was the Chief Executive of First Direct Bank, Chairman of the National Identity Scheme Assurance Group and a Member of the Cabinet Office Delivery Council. As a visiting lecturer, Alan has worked at INSEAD France, Saïd Business School Oxford and Warwick Universities. He is also on the Leeds University Business School Advisory Board. Alan was awarded the 2007/8 Outstanding MBA Teacher Award by Warwick University.

Alan did a very successful job as Chief Executive of First Bank; he managed to treble the size of the company and increased its profits over the course of five years. He made First Bank the UK’s most recommended bank and also initiated internet and offset mortgage services. Alan has also had a position as General Manager of Marketing at HSBC and he was in charge of re-branding Midlands Bank, hoping to raise loyalty and sales.

Alan has advised the National Health Service on Leadership and he has also advised the BBC Governors about developing accountability.

In his speeches, Alan highlights the importance of leadership and communications within companies and believes that communication is necessary. He is an accomplished speaker and has experience speaking to companies such as Allianz Germany; Chordiant Software Inc.; First Direct; Johnson Controls Inc.; the Metropolitan Police; Morgan Sindall plc and Novartis Switzerland.

How did the corporate speaking all start?

Answer:

From doing public speeches as Chief Executive of First Direct Bank and as Marketing chief for HSBC

Question:

Can you remember your first speaking engagement?

Answer:

Yes, at the Guildhall in London to the council, as a young trainee banker.

Question:

And your last event?

Answer:

Of course. Last year I spoke to top management teams at the Home Office, the Metropolitan Police, and at corporate infotainment events, for example.

Which event has been your favourite and why?

Answer:

Speaking to 2,500 at a corporate sales and motivation event.

If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Answer:

It would be an audience of any size but who are open minded about leadership, marketing and customer service.

Answer:

Steve Jobs: great at brand, great at marketing, makes things happen.

Five or six

Do you use powerpoint?

Answer:

Sometime yes, sometimes no, depends upon the nature of the event. When I do use it, I use video and cartoons.
