Alex Bellos is a bestselling author and broadcaster , who specializes in maths, science  and South America. He is a strong communicator with a rare ability to make mathematics relevant and entertaining, and also has a deep knowledge of Brazilian culture, and is an engaging keynote speaker .

Alex Bellos is the author of Alex's Adventures in Numberland, the most successful popular maths title of recent years. It was shortlisted for the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction and a Galaxy National Book Award. The New Scientist wrote: "A wholly original, beautifully written book about mathematics that does its subject justice but is so widely accessible that it will please everyone regardless of their numeracy." It has been translated into 20 different languages and is a bestseller on three continents.

He is also the author of Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life, a book about Brazil seen through the lens of football. It was shortlisted for a British Book Award and was a bestseller, with 12 translations, and is often listed as one of the top ten books ever written on football. He also co-wrote the autobiography of Pelé.

Alex Bellos presented a five-part documentary on Brazil for the BBC, and has made his own films for BBC2's Newsnight, More 4 News and Al Jazeera.

Alex is a regular contributor to radio programs, and spent time in India exploring the links between numbers and Indian spirituality, called Nirvana by Numbers which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
Born and bred in Edinburgh and then Southampton, Alex graduated in Mathematics and Philosophy from Oxford University. He was a staff reporter on the Guardian for four years, and was the paper's South America correspondent based in Rio de Janeiro for five years. He now lives in London.

He speaks fluent Portuguese and often presents in Portuguese.

In 2003 Alex presented a five-part series on Brazil for the BBC, called Inside Out Brazil. His short films about the Amazon have been broadcast on the BBC, More 4 and Al Jazeera International.
