Alex Flynn Biography
After been diagnosed with the degenerative disease Parkinson's, motivational speaker Alex Flynn set himself the ‘10 million meters’ challenge. So far, in the face of adversity, he has completed the gruelling Marathon des Sables (250 km race across the Sahara Desert); run in excess of 135 miles across the Bavarian Alps; and run from London to Rome to meet the Pope.
Alex worked as a lawyer for numerous multinationals, but since his life-changing diagnosis, he has focussed on his 10MillionMetres; a life-changing endurance project, the formation of which was encouraged when he was given the devastating news that he has Parkinson’s disease in 2008.
Before the end of 2014, the 10MillionMetres Challenge will take him more than 6,200 miles around the world, encompassing some of the world’s more interesting and dangerous races. Alex will be running, cycling, swimming, walking or, if necessary, crawling the distance with the aim of raising more than £1Million for research into Parkinson’s disease. Highlights so far include the 2010 Marathon des Sables, running more than 135 miles across the Bavarian Alps and in 2011 traversing 1457 miles from London to Rome in 30 days, as well as marathons, Ironman and Olympic Triathlons.
In 2012 Alex hopes to cross 3200 miles of the USA in 24 days using five different disciplines, constantly fighting against the relentless progression of the disease on his own body. It is a disease which currently has no cure.

Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking begin?
Alex Flynn: It started last year. I have always been able to present, especially when I lectured at several well known universities both in the UK and Europe. My life changing project, 10MillionMetres, has drawn interest from many different sectors and countries. As a consequence, I was repeatedly asked if I did speaking engagements and after a time I decided that I'd give it a go....
Speakers Corner: Which event has been your favourite and why?
Alex Flynn: The talk I gave to Thames Valley Dementia and Neurodegenerative Disease Research Network (DeNDRoN) at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford has been the most interesting and fun so far. There were a lot of very eminent speakers from the neurological and genetics sectors present and I was the end of the day light relief, the adventurer. The part I most enjoyed was linking in what I have learned as a patient from a personal perspective and my experience of leading teams with their research areas. This connection, making it relevant, meant that I had their full attention and also was something they could relate to. I have taken my experiences both in the adventures I have had but also from my time in the various multi-nationals I have worked for and connect with my audience.
Speakers Corner: If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?
Alex Flynn: My sons' weddings.
Speakers Corner: Who would you most like to share a platform with?
Alex Flynn: That's a tough one, as there are several. Marshall Ulrich, Ran Feinnes, or Lance Armstrong.
Speakers Corner: What are your most frequently requested speaking topics?
Alex Flynn: Adventure and dealing with perpetual change.
Speakers Corner: What do you do to ensure your presentation has a lasting impact?
Alex Flynn: I do on occasion use audience interaction, I also change emphasis and intensity dependent on what I am trying to convey and the audience. However, I have been told that I am not easily forgettable as I am the guy with the disease doing the impossible.
Speakers Corner: What can a typical corporate audience learn from your experiences?
Alex Flynn: The power of positive thought and self belief. Team building and selection. Dealing with perpetual change to achieve success.
