Alex (Robert Bathurst) Biography

Alex is a city institution. The cartoon about life in the City of London appears every day on the front page of the Daily Telegraph Business Section.  Alex has taken to the stage for a live show which has toured the world, and his radio show on Classic FM won a Sony award – the ‘Oscars’ of radio. Alex is a rip-roaring alternative to the standard after dinner or cabaret act. Played by the accomplished Cold Feet actor Robert Bathurst, he parodies the world of banking with a confident, front-foot and a compelling demeanor.

Alex - the Show

Robert Bathurst performs as Alex - the country's favourite obnoxious cartoon investment banker.   A 75 minute theatre show enjoyed a hugely successful run in London’s West End and worldwide, and a 20 minute after-dinner version is the ideal choice for corporate entertainment.

Alex covers topical issues such as the credit crunch; the bail-out; the balance between banks and the government’s money, all built into an apposite, unreconstructed rant – yet despite himself he exudes vulnerability and is immensely likeable.

Robert Bathurst - the actor

Robert Bathurst is best known for his role as David Marsden in the hit ITV series Cold Feet. Other TV roles include Mark Taylor in Joking Apart, Mark Thatcher in Coup! and the Prime Minister in My Dad's The Prime Minister.

Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking start?

Alex (Robert Bathurst): It's a natural progression from my daily appearance since 1988 as a cartoon character satirizing City life, to a world tour of my one man stage play surrounded by cartoons, transforming into an award winning DJ on Classic FM: now I’m Alex the Corporate Speaker.

Speakers Corner: Can you remember your first speaking engagement?

Alex (Robert Bathurst): I remember it well, I was thirteen, a balloon debate at school: I successfully pleaded the case for Attila the Hun against Shakespeare, Gandhi, Charlie Chaplin and David Essex.

Speakers Corner: And your last event?

Alex (Robert Bathurst): A three and a half hour speech to my boss arguing the case for me being paid a very large bonus. I’d bribed his p.a. to sit me next to him in business class on a flight to New York. He feigned sleep, but I continued to plant the suggestion subconsciously in his brain. Needless to say I got the money.

Speakers Corner: Which event has been your favorite and why?

Alex (Robert Bathurst): I was keynote speaker at Megabank's corporate affairs conference in Bermuda last year. I chose to present in the 8.30am slot, assuming that all the other delegates would be so hung over from the previous night that they wouldn't manage to get out of bed in time. They didn't. And neither did I.

Speakers Corner: How has The City changed in 25 years?

Alex (Robert Bathurst): Lunches are shorter, meetings longer, graduates cleverer, bosses stupider, compliance sharper, clients duller, regulation tighter, monetary policy looser. For all of which I give thanks, otherwise I'd have nothing to rant about in my after dinner speaking engagements.
