Bertrand Piccard is a world famous adventurer, known for his balloon flight around the world. He is also a psychiatrist and has become a sought after business keynote speaker.
Bertrand was born in Switzerland and growing up he was surrounded by scientists and explorers; his grandfather was the first man to explore the stratosphere and he also invented the bathyscaphe. His father then used the bathyscaphe to dive to the deepest part of the oceans.
Bertrand graduated from the University of Lausanne with a degree in psychiatry; he specialised in psychiatry and psychotherapy for both adults and children and became an expert in hypnotherapy. He went on to teach at the Swiss Medical Hypnosis Society.
Bertrand grew up with a great interest in ballooning and how people behave under a large amount of pressure. He gained licenses to fly balloons, airplanes, gliders and motorised gliders and in 1985 he became the European hang-glider aerobatics champion.
"Thank you so much for your fascinating and gripping presentation. We were very impressed and motivated by your wisdom, your attitude and your brilliant advice."
In 1999 Betrand took off on an adventure of a lifetime, him and Brian Jones set off on the very first balloon circumnavigation of the world and their journey did not allow any stops along the way. It took the pair just under 20 days to finish the adventure and during this time they made seven new world records. After completeing their journey Betrand and Brian were awarded with the Olympic Order and a Gold medal from the French Ministry of Youth and Sport. They also received the highest honours from the National Geographics Society and the FAI as well as numerous other associations.
Bertrand’s next mission was to construct a solar powered long range aircraft and the project was named ‘Solar Impulse ‘and in 2010 it made its first flight, by 2012 it was able to fly from Morocco to Switzerland. In 2013 Bertrand took the Solar Impulse from Mountain View California to JKF Airport in New York.
Bertrand is also a successful author and has written two books titled ‘Une Trace dans le ciel’ and ‘The Greatest Adventure’, which he wrote alongside Brian Jones. ‘The Greatest Adventure’ was translated into nine different languages and was a best-seller in France.
As a speaker, Bertrand is fascinating and unique because he uses his balloon adventure as a symbol to explain the psychology behind human relationships. He focuses on human behaviour using examples from his journey to show how people act under a severe amount of pressure. He is ideal for corporate audiences because he focuses on teamwork, communication and stress all of which are linked to working life.
