George Alagiah Biography

George Alagiah, one of the UK’s best loved news presenters, is a consummate and experienced awards host and facilitator. He  joined the BBC Six O'Clock News in 2003, and co-presented with Natasha Kaplinsky.

As well the Six O’Clock News, George also presents World News Today on BBC World, the BBC's international news and information television channel.

Background and career

Born in Sri Lanka, George was brought up in Ghana before moving to Britain and graduating from Durham University.

As a leading foreign correspondent, George was recognised throughout the industry for his reporting on many of the most significant events of the last decade. He covered the trade in human organs in India; the murder of street children in Brazil; the genocide in Rwanda and its aftermath; the plight of the marsh Arabs in southern Iraq; the civil war in Afghanistan; the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa; the effects of Hurricane Mitch on Central America; the Kosovan refugee crisis and the NATO liberation of Pristina.

George has interviewed numerous prominent figures, including Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan and Yasser Arafat.

He has won several awards, including the Critics Award and the Golden Nymph at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, Amnesty International's Best TV Journalist and the James Cameron Memorial Trust award.

George’s first book, A Passage to Africa, received considerable critical acclaim. He has also contributed to The Guardian, Daily Telegraph and Independent, and lectured at the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society for Arts.
