Liz Jackson Biography

Liz Jackson is an inspiring motivational speaker and conference speaker who launched her company over ten years ago in the UK with the help of the Prince of Wales Trust, receiving a £1000 grant.  Today, Great Guns Marketing - an outbound business-to-business appointment making agency - has a multi-million pound turnover and is growing year on year.

An Amazing Achievement...

For Liz especially this is an amazing achievement because in the same year she started her business at the age of 25, her sight was deteriorating and Liz is now totally blind.  However, this didn’t limit her determination to follow her dreams.  With no advanced educational background (Liz came out of school with 3 O-levels and didn’t pursue her educational career any further), she truly is an inspirational figure and was awarded an MBE in 2007 to recognise her incredible achievements.  As a motivational speaker Liz speaks from a place of considerable experience and honesty.

Great Guns Marketing won the Customer Focused Award (part of the National Business Awards – sponsored by Orange) as being the company that best demonstrated its ability to place the customer at the heart of its business and deploy and manage its resources to most effectively meet the needs of its customer base. These prestigious awards were described by Gordon Brown as the Business Oscars.

Liz won the Women Mean Business Award that was sponsored by T-Mobile and the Sunday Express – Britain’s biggest award dedicated to women running their own businesses.  The award is designed to recognize the growing importance of independent businesswomen to both the economy and the community.  Liz took away with her a big cheque of £10,000 and £3,000 worth of telecommunications equipment all from T-Mobile.  It was a fabulous evening and Prince Charles even sent Liz a message to express his congratulations!  In 2009 Liz also took part in Channel 4's The Secret Millionaire which proved to be a very heartfelt and inspirational episode.

Speakers Corner: How did the corporate speaking start?

Liz Jackson: It started in 2003 when I won the national Women Mean Business Award sponsored by T Mobile and The Sunday Express. I received a lot of PR as a result and then had a call from a lady in Dubai asking me to go and speak at an event called Entrepreneurs in Dubai. There were several other speakers but the keynotes were Donald Trump, Dame Anita Roddick and Stellios.

Speakers Corner: And your last event?

Liz Jackson: Tuesday this week at the Everywoman Conference in Glasgow. Audience of around 200 women entrepreneurs.

Speakers Corner: Which event has been your favourite and why?

Liz Jackson: There’s been loads of great ones but one that stands out was speaking for the Institute of Travel and Tourism in Gran Canaria. I shared the platform with Charles Kennedy and Bill Bryson and the audience we very charismatic travel people who were very responsive. The hotel and location were stunning. The whole thing was a huge success.

Speakers Corner: If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Liz Jackson: Anything with a responsive audience. I particularly enjoy panel discussions when I share the panel with Government Ministers or CEO’s of large organisations. This is best when we take questions from the audience and the panel are a mix of people from different backgrounds expressing different views in response to the questions.

Speakers Corner: Who would you most like to share a platform with?

Liz Jackson: Happy with pretty much anyone really. I’d like to meet Simon Cowell or Richard Branson so sharing a platform with either of them would be pretty special.

Speakers Corner: On average, how many times a year do you speak at corporate events?

Liz Jackson: It probably averages out to about 35 – 40

Speakers Corner: Do you use powerpoint?

Liz Jackson: Most of the time, yes!

Speakers Corner: Are you as happy speaking to 50 as to 1,000 people?

Liz Jackson: Yes!

Speakers Corner: How do you like to be introduced?

Liz Jackson: Ideally? “I’d like to introduce Liz Jackson”. Short and sweet. I hate it when someone introduces me by reading my bio. I’d rather I told my story.

Speakers Corner: Do you always like to do a briefing call before the event?

Liz Jackson: Yes, it does help to know who the audience are and what their main interests will be; and to make sure the organiser is happy with what I intend to say.

Speakers Corner: What are the most asked for topics?

Liz Jackson: Inspiration, motivation, leadership, customer services, entrepreneurship, how to increase sales, telemarketing, etc, etc!

Speakers Corner: Is your speech interactive with audience participation?

Liz Jackson: I often ask a couple of questions during main talk and most of the time I do a Q & A session when I finished speaking

Speakers Corner: Do you have any funny/embarrassing speaking anecdotes you care to share?

Liz Jackson: Maybe the funniest one was when I was speaking with Charles Kennedy in Gran Canaria. He should have been on the same flight as me from Gatwick arriving in Gran Canaria the evening before the conference. It transpired that he had missed the flight but the organisers had arranged another flight at 06:00 in the morning from Heathrow, so he would arrive in time to speak. I received a message in the morning that he had gone to Gatwick instead of Heathrow for the flight and hence would be turning up. It was all reported in the national papers the following day!

Speakers Corner: Your favourite film?

Liz Jackson: Mary Poppins

Speakers Corner: Favourite book?

Liz Jackson: Harry Potter

Speakers Corner: Favourite holiday destination?

Liz Jackson: Kenya

Speakers Corner: Country or townie?

Liz Jackson: Mainly a country girl.
