Biography: Nick Wheeler - Read interview

Nick Wheeler is Founder and Managing Director of Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts, the leading mail order clothes company. Nick is a fantastic business keynote speaker, recounting the story of setting up the number one on line shirt retailer in the UK.

Nick founded Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts in 1986, while studying geography at Bristol University. After two years with Bain & Co, strategy consultants, he went “full time” in November 1989.

Charles Tyrwhitt sells shirts for men, women and children through mail order, retail (since 1997) and the Internet (since 1998). The company philosophy has always been to “surprise, delight and excite colleagues and customers” and to make it impossible to buy a better shirt.

The company has grown rapidly in the UK, the USA and Germany with sales of £50 million last year via mail order, the Internet and nine stores.

Additionally, Nick Wheeler is a non-executive director and shareholder in The White Company, a leading mail order and retail company selling household goods. He also happens to be married to Chris Rucker, the White Company’s founder!

Interview with Nick Wheeler

Question:

How did the corporate speaking begin?

Answer:

It never really began. I just do things I think I will enjoy. I like speaking at events where people are interested in my story and what I have to say. I did a few and people kept asking me back.

Question:

Which event has been your favourite and why?

Answer:

Leaders in London 2007. I was sandwiched between Kofi Anan and Al Gore and beat them both on audience scoring.

Question:

If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Answer:

I would have liked to have addressed the troops prior to the Battle of Agincourt. Henry V would take some beating!

Question:

Who would you most like to share a platform with?

Answer:

Michael Dell. We started our businesses at the same time and we are the same age. He has done rather better than me and I would like to get to the bottom of why!

Question:

What are your most frequently requested speaking topics?

Answer:

How you keep growing.

Question:

What do you do to ensure your presentation has a lasting impact?

Answer:

Keep the message simple. Too many people make too many things too complicated!

Question:

What can a typical corporate audience learn from your experiences?

Answer:

The self-belief that anything is possible.
