Interview with Nigel Barlow

Question:

How did the corporate speaking start?

Answer:

I was doing smaller, intense training events and about twenty years ago my clients started asking me to do bigger conference.

Question:

Can you remember your first speaking engagement?

Answer:

No – I’ve had therapy to remove it form my memory!

Question:

And your last event?

Answer:

A great session with a French multi-national, over-looking Rotterdam harbour.

Question:

Which event has been your favourite and why?

Answer:

A long-term Swedish client’s One Hundred Years Celebration. I had to speak after Neil Armstrong.

Question:

If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Answer:

I usually like being where I am at the moment – when I stop enjoying it, I’ll quit.

Question:

Who would you most like to share a platform with?

Answer:

Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, or Richard Thompson.

Question:

On average, how many times a year do you speak at corporate events?

Answer:

80 – 100.

Question:

Do you use powerpoint?

Answer:

Yes – but I do ‘life by powerpoint’ instead of ‘death by powerpont’. Visuals should be visual – end of story.

Question:

Are you as happy speaking to 50 as to 1,000 people?

Answer:

Yes, though naturally it’s a different style that works for a more intimate group than a football-stadium audience.

Question:

Do you always like to do a briefing call before the event?

Answer:

Always.

Question:

What are the most asked for topics?

Answer:

Creativity, Innovation, Leadership, Customer Focus, The Future, and Mindset Change.

Question:

Is your speech at all interactive with audience participation?

Answer:

Very interactive. I have a preference for the after-lunch spot.

Question:

Do you have any funny/embarrassing speaking anecdotes you care to share?

Answer:

I frequently dream about turning up at the wrong venue, in the wrong country. Hasn’t happened yet.

Question:

Your favourite film?

Answer:

Les Enfant du Paradis, M Houlot’s Holiday

Question:

Favourite book?

Answer:

The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell

Question:

Favourite holiday destination?

Answer:

Italy, Italy, or… Italy

Question:

What’s your tipple – wine, beer, champagne?

Answer:

All – but separately.

Question:

Country or townie?

Answer:

Both
