Sinclair Beecham Biography

Sinclair Beecham founded the world famous sandwich chain, Pret a Manger and is a powerful keynote speaker on the factors behind the success of all his business ventures.

Background and career

Sinclair graduated with a degree in Urban Estate Management. He then joined Crest Estates, a property developer as development and marketing executive. Sinclair then teamed up with his partner Julian Metcalfe to form Pret A Manger.

In 1986, the first Pret A Manger opened in Victoria. By 1993 Pret had 15 shops around London. Pret A Manger currently operates more than 100 stores in the United Kingdom, and opened its first international shop in New York and the company plans further expansion throughout Manhattan and to Asia in the near future.

In 2002, McDonald's reached an agreement to acquire a minority interest in Pret A Manger. Founders Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham said, "Since opening the first Pret A Manger in 1986, we have been obsessed with selling good natural food to people who are in a rush at lunchtime. After 14 years, we are fortunate to have thousands of loyal customers in the U.K. and many visitors who have urged us to open Pret A Manger abroad. But to do this, we need a huge amount of support. Every new country will be an enormous challenge."

Pret A Manger is recognised as a leader in customer service and staff motivation.

Sinclair is currently involved in developing a new up-market budget hotel concept. This hotel is intended to be the first in a chain of high quality, limited service hotels. The hotel is aimed primarily at the business market but its offering is also likely to appeal to weekend leisure customers.
