LEGENDARY Suffolk-based race horse Desert Orchid died peacefully today at the age of 27.
The famous Cheltenham Gold Cup winner of 1989 achieved iconic status within the National Hunt arena and was adored by racing enthusiasts for his will and adaptability.
After a career which saw him win 34 races in total, he moved to Suffolk with trainer David Elsworth, residing at the historical Egerton Stables in Newmarket.
Former champion jockey and one of Speakers Corner's favourite racing personalities, Richard Dunwoody said "He was a fantastic horse to ride and without doubt the best horse I ever rode in my entire career."
