Jonathan Freedland talks to Nick Leeson on BBC Radio 4’s The Long View to compare recent events at Barclays to the 13th century scandal of financier Richard Lyons.
Like Bob Diamond, Lyons was requested to appear before parliament to explain the suspicious financial practices that had been used to get around the prohibition of Usury. And the context is right too – a time of economic crisis and increasing suspicion of high finance and its influence on politics.
Nick Leeson and Jonathan Freedland were joined on air by former Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Sir John Gieve; financial historian Adrian Bell, John Coggan of the Economist and Performance poet, Attila the Stockbroker.
