Gavin Esler is set to leave BBC Newsnight in January; he has been hosting the show since 2003 and will be replaced by Laura Kuenssberg.
The BBC are unable to confirm what Gavin will do next after a successful 10 years with the show, Laura is currently ITV’s business editor and will join the show in February as the chief correspondent and editor.
It is estimated that Laura will host Newsnight once a week and this will mark the beginning of the changes that are about to take place on the show under the new editor, Ian Katz. Before his new role on Newsnight, Ian was the deputy editor of the Guardian and he has been with Newsnight since September 2013.
David Grossman, who was the political correspondent for Newsnight is to become the shows technology editor. Laura is very positive about returning to the BBC, speaking about her new role on Newsnight she stated ‘But I'm truly delighted to be joining a reinvigorated Newsnight both to present and report at such an exciting time. It's been a long held ambition of mine to work full time on the programme and I can't wait to get started.’
ITV News editor, Geoff Hill took the news of Laura’s departure graciously and emailed the ITV team saying ‘I'm sorry to tell you all that Laura Kuenssberg is leaving ITV News. She will be taking up an exciting new role at BBC Newsnight as chief correspondent and regular presenter, keeping Paxman on his toes…I'm sure you will join me in thanking her for all of her hard work at ITV News and wishing her the very best for the future.’
