London student's folding plug wins top design award

18th March 2010

An electric plug which can be folded flat has beaten 90 international entries to win the Brit Insurance Design of the Year award.

Min-Kyu Choi, from London's Royal College of Art, hit upon the idea after having to carry around a bulky conventional plug to charge his laptop.

His reinterpreted plug was first shown at the college's graduate show in 2009.

Artist Antony Gormley, chairman of the judging panel, said the plug could "make a difference to everyone's life".

'Elegant' design

Gormley called the plug design: "Thought-through, responsive and modest, the folding plug shows how intelligent, elegant and inventive design can make a difference to everyone's life."

Mr Choi's design beat designer Alexander McQueen's last collection, which was named one of seven category winners after his death last month.

Earlier this month, Mr Choi, a London student, was named as the winner in the product category of the award.

The judging panel included designer Tom Dixon, editor of Wired magazine David Rowan and broadcaster Janet Street-Porter.

Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum, which gives the award, said: "It's great to see such a practical but elegant demonstration of what design can do to make everyday life so much better."
