Management Today reveals it's '35 Women Under 35' for 2010

7 July 2010

Business title, Management Today has unveiled its 10th anniversary list of high flying young women in business. Once again, the 35 women who feature on the list represent every sector of commercial life, from banking and consultancy to fashion and music. It is another generation of resilient and hard working women who are thriving in these tough times. The list includes 16 entrepreneurs and 12 women from the creative industries, surprising when the first thing to go in a recession is the marketing, PR and ad budget.

The list was announced at the Haymarket hotel last week, with a speaker who featured on the list back in 2001. The internet entrepreneur and government Digital Champion Martha Lane Fox spoke to the guests, citing the German philosopher Goethe as an inspiration: ‘Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.’ She encouraged women to be bold in business and totally confident in your abilities.

Individuals named on the prestigious list include; Alison Bishop, VP of JP Morgan’s private bank; Tamara Rajah from McKinsey & Co; Lucy Carver from BSkyB; Kristy Goodger from Elemental Herbology; and Rain Newton-Smith from Oxford Economics.

All the women who made the list, emphasised the importance for being true to themselves. Isabel Garvey, senior VP at Warner Music International said, ‘the only disadvantage I’ve come across being a woman in business is the lack for role models. The senior women there are not the type of characters you want to become – they’re quite masculine.’

Another common theme was ambition. The founders of online beauty boutique Cult Beauty, Jessica DeLuca Moore and Alexia Inge seem to have bucket loads! Inspired by founder of Net-a-Porter, Natalie Massenet's recent sale of the company for £50 million, Jessica and Alexis want to emulate her success. 'We want to be the Net-a-Porter of beauty says Alexia.

Tamara Rajah is another woman with big plans. Not only a management consultant at McKinsey, Tamara also runs a women's businesswear company, Tamara Kanes in her spare time and survives on just 4 hours sleep a night!
