Matt Cardle stormed through to win X Factor 2010 and it will take time for the reality to sink in. Speaking on today’s Daybreak, Matt said “It was so shocking and it made me numb straightaway...I have not really got the feeling back yet...I said to someone earlier ‘It will probably sink in next Christmas when I watch somebody else win and I say oh, I did that last year’. It is just crazy.”
Referred to by Simon Cowell as “one heck of a nice guy” Matt is a former painter and decorator from Essex who has risen through the ranks under the tutelage of Dannii Minogue. Figures show that Cardle was consistently ahead in the ratings receiving the greatest number of votes every week from Week 2 onwards. Early reports reveal the show was watched by 17 million viewers, even reaching 18.8 million at one point, and Cardle’s debut single – ‘When We Collide’, a cover of Biffy Clyro’s Many of Horror – is expected to lead the way in the Christmas Number One stakes.
Simon Cowell said he was “absolutely gutted” when his group One Direction went out but also responded with the belief that, “This is just the beginning for these boys.” The group sang ‘She’s The One’ with Robbie Williams and are expected to rival the likes of JLS.
The show was even discussed on BBC Radio 4’s The Today Programme this morning with media entrepreneur Peter Bazalgette and media history professor Jean Seaton. The show has contributed to the rise of Saturday night entertainment and a change in television viewing habits as live, interactive shows have become increasingly popular. Simon Cowell is also planning to bring back a Top of the Pops-style weekly show – which would be the first of its kind since Top of the Pops was last aired in 2006.
The X Factor Live Tour is set to kick off at the LG Arena in Birmingham on Saturday 19th February 2011.
