After a 30 year run, the South Bank Show is in its final months. At the last ever South Bank Show Awards, a special award went to Lord Melvyn Bragg, the presenter of the show for his outstanding achievement.
Britain's Got Talent winners Diversity was pipped at the post in the dance category by the Royal Birmingham Ballet, while BBC2's political comedy In the Thick of It took the comedy award. Other award winners included artist Anish Kapoor, indie rock star Florence and the Machine, author Adam Foulds, and film director Andrea Arnold. Actress Rachel Weisz collected the theatre award on behalf of the Donmar Warehouse for the production of A Streetcar Named Desire.
The Arts Council England's Diversity Award was presented by Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley and awarded to Julie McNamara, and the Times Breakthrough Award went to artist David Blandy.
A host of celebrities turned out for the glittering event including Raonnie Wood, Andrew Lloyd Webber, comedian Michael McIntyre and artist Tracey Emin.
