Rageh Omaar: New Presenter at ITV News

14 January 2013

Rageh Omaar  has been appointed as a special correspondent and presenter at ITV News.

Rageh has left his role at Al-Jazeera, a news channel based in Qatar which he joined in 2006, to pursue a career with ITV News. The news channel has finally won Rageh over, having previously tried to get him on board in 2004.

He has said of his new role that, ‘Joining ITV News represents a return to news reporting for me, which is where my passion for journalism began’.

The news reporter will be covering a wide variety of news stories for the channel and will produce special in-depth reports from around the UK and abroad.

Rageh’s experience as a news correspondent is great, having had high profile roles within the BBC, reporting from Darfur, Kabul and a rooftop in Baghdad during the invasion of Iraq. It was these roles that landed him a BAFTA and a Peabody Award.

More recently he has worked for Al-Jazeera English as the Middle Eastern correspondent for the London division, where he had his own monthly documentaries.

Michael Jermey, ITV’s Director of News and Current Affairs has said of him, ‘Rageh is one of the very best television news correspondents of his generation. We’re delighted that he’s joining ITV News.’
