With champagne on hand for every Formula 1 podium finish one might feel the traditional celebratory spray was becoming routine. However, the tradition received a resounding and defibrillating jolt with Lewis Hamilton winning his third F1 Championship meaning he now matches Jackie Stewart as the most successful British driver and the first British driver to defend his title.
The Guardian reports Hamilton as saying this about his incredible feat: “It’s amazing. I can’t find the right words to tell you how amazing this feels”. Turning to his Mercedes team mates and fans he added “I love you guys and everything you do for me. For all my family, I love you all”.
The race did however did not pass without controversy with a visibly angry Nico Rosberg joining Hamilton on the podium (who came second) complaining that Hamilton had made an aggressive turn at the first corner forcing him from pole position to fifth. Hamilton later responded by saying “Everyone has the right to their own opinion but it doesn’t matter because I won the race so I feel pretty good about it".
Despite this Hamilton embraced the champagne spraying tradition in a way only a three time champion can: with gusto, excitement and with the wonderful disregard for anything electrical.
