James Timpson Biography

James Timpson is a keynote, motivational and after dinner speaker, alongside his main role as Chief Executive of Timpson - a thriving family business since it was first established in Manchester in 1865. It is now the UK's largest shoe repairer, key cutter, engraver and watch repairer - with James and his father at the helm and 3000 'colleagues' operating over 600 shops.

Before and after his time at Durham University James worked in all areas of the business from branch manager to area manager until joining the Timpson House team.

James and his father John have created a unique business culture that is based on recruiting personalities and giving them complete authority to run their shops in any way they want. Timpson has won several awards for customer service and employee satisfaction, and James pioneers the forefront of mentoring opportunities for underprivileged communities. They have acquired a seaside hotel specifically for staff holidays, and James was awarded an OBE for services to training and employment for disadvantaged people in 2011.

The management culture is designed to ensure that those serving customers are treated as the most important people in the business; everyone else acts to ensure that the customer service is of the best possible quality.

As he shows in conference presentations, James believes in 'upside down' management and an absolute focus on delivering customer service. He worked initially as a branch manager before progressing through the business, and understands exactly what motivates the front line team.
