Kevin Ivison Biography

Kevin Ivison is an ex bomb disposal expert who suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after a dramatic and harrowing ordeal in Iraq. His incredible story of recovery makes him an inspirational speaker of the highest calibre. Against the odds he has become a confident and eloquent speaker and has written a book about his revival.

The son of an infantry soldier, Kevin Ivison always knew he wanted to be a soldier. Born in Shrewsbury and educated at Welbeck College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he became the British Army’s youngest officer in December 2000 when, aged nineteen, he commissioned into the Royal Logistic Corps. He subsequently deployed to Afghanistan and the Balkans before beginning his training as an Ammunition Technical Officer (ATO) – the British Army’s bomb disposal experts.

As an ATO, Kevin led a bomb disposal troop in Germany, deployed to Northern Ireland as ATO Londonderry, served in Iraq as ATO Al Amarah and was embedded with US forces in Baghdad where he worked as a weapons intelligence expert.

It was during his tour as ATO Al Amarah that Kevin faced his toughest test –  with only two weeks left before he was due to leave Iraq, Kevin was tasked to defuse a sophisticated bomb by hand, under fire, with a crowd of many hundred Iraqis hurling petrol bombs and with two friends killed by an earlier explosion lying only yards away. Against overwhelming odds and with little chance of survival, Kevin left final messages for loved ones before walking to what he was sure would be his death.

Kevin left the Army in 2009 and since has worked as the Director of The Counter-IED Consultancy, advising innovators venture capitalists and the defence industry on explosive ordnance disposal.

For his actions at Red One, Kevin Ivison was awarded the George Medal in 2006. Kevin is eloquent and inspirational - ideal for after dinner and motivational speaking. Kevin can share his stories of leadership, peak performance and teamwork on the speaking circuit.
