An Interview with Mark Jones

1 January 2012

Which presenter to you most admire and why?

I’ve worked with many brilliant presenters, such as Jack Dee and Tom O’Connor. They not only present professionally and with apparent ease, but they can also think on their feet, as can Stephen Fry.

How did your presenting work start?

Working for one the big radio stations (there weren’t as many in the 70’s!) in Liverpool (Radio City) people realised that I was humorous (on the breakfast show) and knew about sport (from presenting sports programmes) so I was asked to host a series of sportsmen’s dinners, and the rest is history.

Can you remember your first live presenting gig?

My first presenting gig was at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium in the Trophy Room, with former Chelsea and Man Utd Manager Tommy Docherty as speaker and comedian Ken Dodd. Talk about starting in the deep end!

And, the last?

An American Heart Association fundraising dinner at Champaign Country Club, Champaign, Illinois, USA;

Which live event has been your favourite and why?

I enjoy virtually all events I host, (especially the well-organised ones!) I must admit the annual Manchester United dinner (with all the players and Sir Alex) is a highlight.

If you could present at any event, past or future, what would it be?

The Woodstock Festival, August 1969.

On average, how many corporate events do you do a year?

Between 150 – 200.

Are you as happy with an audience of 50 or 1,000 people?

The bigger the better! I’ve hosted events with 125,000 (a Michael Jackson concert) to the annual Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool (up to 300,000) to small golf club fundraisers with just 60 people.

Do you always like to do a briefing call before the event?

ALWAYS, and not on the day of the event!

Do you have any funny/embarrassing presenting anecdotes you care to share?

Yes, I do, quite a few. But as to sharing ‘em… I don’t think so…

Favourite book?

The series of Travelogues written by drummer from the Canadian rock band, Rush, Neil Peart.

Favourite holiday destination?

Anywhere hot and sunny… with a pool… and some good company.

What’s your tipple?

Diet Coke… I’m teetotal.

Country or townie?

Townie, no question. Born in Manchester, lived near Liverpool, couldn’t be anything but.
