An Interview With Noreena Hertz

1 January 2012

Will big business emerge stronger from the recession, leaner and more responsible?

The next few years ahead are going to be tough. The skills that businesses need to deploy today are new. What will determine competitive advantage is changing. These are issues covered in my speeches.

How did the corporate speaking start?

The corporate speaking began after the publication of my first book, the bestselling The Silent Takeover, in 2001. There was a lot of interest from a wide array of businesses and governments. As my reputation continued to grow so did my speaking opportunities.

Can you remember your first speaking engagement?

Yes, I definitely remember my first speaking engagement. I was invited to Brussels by the Belgium Prime Minister to speak on a panel with Bill Clinton (former US President), Mary Robinson (Former PM of Ireland), and Baron Peter Piot (former Under-Secretary-General of the UN and former Executive Director of the UN specialized agency UNAIDS) in 2001. Quite a way to start!

And your last event?

The last event was this past week in Italy (Reggio Emilia) in one of the oldest theatres in the country. It was a packed auditorium with a great audience.

Which event has been your favourite and why?

It's impossible to single one out. The opportunity to interact with diverse, smart audiences all over the world is something I really enjoy and each event is rewarding.
