An Interview with Roger Black

1 January 2012

What are the most asked for topics?

Most common topics are motivation, teamwork, goal setting and change management.

How did the corporate speaking start?

My speaking career began off the back of my 1996 Olympic success.

What was your most recent speaking engagement?

My most recent speech was to Financial and Mortgage Advisers – I covered the need to think differently to be the best, to offer them inspiration by recounting the highs (& lows) of my athletic career. I wanted to give them something to take away and apply to their profession.

Which event has been your favourite and why?

I especially enjoy events with a multi-national audience – it’s very satisfying, as by the end of the hour you can make a connection with people who don’t necessarily know you.

If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

To speak at an event for young entrepreneurs would be great and hope that my words could help create success and many jobs.

Who would you most like to share a platform with?

I would like to share the platform with Kriss Akabusi, Steve Backley and Jessica Ennis.

On average, how many times a year do you speak at corporate events?

On average, about 70 speeches per year. I think my best year was 98 speeches.

Are you as happy speaking to 50 as to 1,000 people?

Any size audience is fine.

How do you like to be introduced?

I am usually introduced as one of the UK’s most popular Olympic athletes and a television celebrity.

Do you always like to do a briefing call before the event?

I always hold a briefing call with the client before an event to get a feel for the theme, as I can tailor my presentation to the client’s requirements.

Do you have any funny/embarrassing speaking anecdotes you care to share?

We lost all the lights for a short time whilst I was presenting – to this day I cannot remember what I said but afterwards, backstage, Sir David Frost told me he couldn’t have done any better, so I guess it was ok!

Your favourite film?

My favourite film is The Princess Bride and favourite book is Where the Wild Things Are.

Favourite holiday destination?

We love taking holidays in the West Country – especially St Mawes.

Country or townie?

I’ve lived in both town and country but lean towards country now.
