Charles Secrett Biography

Charles Secrett, one of the UK’s leading environmentalists, is a Founder Member of The Robertsbridge Group, an Advisor on Climate and Sustainability, and a Senior Associate of the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership. He is also a knowledgeable and charismatic keynote speaker.

Background and career

Charles has been Chair of the Board of Triodos Renewables, the Triodos Bank’s renewable energy investment fund, since 2004. Between 2004 and 2008, he was a Special Advisor on Climate, Environment and Sustainability for The Mayor of London, a Board Member of the London Development Agency and Chair of its Health and Sustainability Advisory Group.  He was a member of the UK Government's Roundtable (then Commission) for Sustainable Development for ten years. Charles has been appointed to Shell's Global External Review Committee.

As Executive Director of Friends of the Earth (1993 to 2003), Charles led its transformation into becoming the UK's most effective campaign organisation for many years.

Charles is also an advisor for BP’s Target Neutral Programme, and for the board of BASE Cities (he gives strategic advice on developing municipal and business engagement with, and investments in, best practice carbon mitigation and sustainability technologies/products).

Charles was also previously Programme Director, Sustainable Cities, for Respect Europe; and Chief Executive of FOE EWNI Trust, responsible for organisational strategy, public and political positioning.

From 1990-1993, Charles was Programme co-Director (Climate Change) at the International Institute for Environment and Development.

He has worked on a variety of environmental research and investigation projects in Brazil, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Nicaragua and Nigeria.

Pen Hadow warns that the Arctic will be ice-free within a decade

The findings of the Catlins Arctic Survey analysed by Cambridge University and the WWF have shown that the Arctic is melting at such a rate that it could be almost ice free within 10 years. The results of the expedition will be presented to a UN meeting in Copenhagen in December as further evidence that the world must reduce carbon emissions in order to prevent the Arctic melting at an even faster rate. Pen's expedition last winter, was blighted by technical problems, and after the high tech radar equipment to measure the ice thickness failed after the first few days, they were forced to continue with a simple ice drill.
