Lewis Gordon Pugh becomes first person to swim accross Everest Lake 24th May 2010The environmental campaigner and motivational speaker, Lewis Gordon Pugh nicknamed the "human polar bear", has swum 1km (0.62 miles) across a glacial lake on Mount Everest to highlight the impact of global warming. Lewis, wore only swimming trunks, goggles and a swimming hat to face the 2C waters of Pumori Lake at 17,000ft (5,300m). 36,000 runners were on the streets of London yesterday for the Virgin London Marathon 26th April 201036,000 people took to the streets of London for the 2010 Virgin London Marathon. Despite forecasts for hot weather, the elements proved to be perfect for the runners with a fair amount of light rain. Tipped to win the race, Mara Yamauchi of Great Britain, did not manage to run fast enough on the day. No doubt, her 6 day journey back to the UK because of the volcanic ash took its toll on her performance. The Russian Liliya Shobukhova was first over the post. Boris Johnson was thrilled at the turnout and the capability of London to put on such a streamlined and successful event.
The BBC have announced that Colin Murray will cover the World Cup in place of Adrian Chiles 23rd April 2010The speculation as to who will replace Adrian Chiles to cover the World Cup football coverage is over. The BBC have announced that the job will go to Colin Murray and his duties will include the 10pm highlight. The Radio 5 Live host and presenter of Europa League matches for Channel 5, Colin described his selection as 'mind-blowing'.
Chaired by Evan Davis, the Samuel Johnson award judges announce longlist of 19 books 22nd April 2010The judging panel of the BBC's 2010 Samuel Johnson prize for non-fiction, chaired by economist & jounalist Evan Davis, have announced the longlist of 19 books. The books vying to win the £20,000 award include Alex Bellos's book demystify maths, Philip Balls' book 'The Music Instant' and 'Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human' by Richard Wrangham. Authors and journalists. Daniel Finklestein, Jan Dalley,Roger Highfield and Stella Tillyard make up the judging panel. A shortlist of will be announced in May and the winner will be announced at an award ceremony which will be televised in July.
Scientists claim popular brain training games do not make users any smarter 21st April 2010Brain training games do nothing to boost mental sharpness, scientists have claimed. In a special programme of Bang Goes the Theory tonight the team will present the finding of the research published in the respected journal Nature. Presenter Dallas Campbell said: "Millions of us play brain-training games on the assumption that expensive games make us better at everyday thinking tasks. We set out to gather real, scientific evidence that would answer the question of whether these games are worth our money. And now we have our answer." In an experiment, more than 11,000 people spent six weeks practising puzzles on computers. They did get better at the games - but there was no improvement in their mental abilities. Brain-training games are a multi-million-pound industry. Many are marketed as helping to improve memory, keep the mind active and, in some cases, prevent dementia.

The controller of Radio 4, Mark Damazer, leaves the speech station to become Master of St Peter's College, Oxford 15th April 2010Peter Damazer, the head of Radio 4, has announced his departure from the speech station to take up an academic role. He will leave the BBC in October to become Master of St Peter's College, Oxford. Under Mark Damazer's watch, Radio 4's listening figures are the highest in a decade and decisions such as bringing Evan Davis to The Today Programme and Kirsty Young to present Desert Island Discs won him much praise from the listeners.

James Cracknell & Ben Fogle will cross Australia on foot 26th February 2010James Cracknell and Ben Fogle are to embark on their latest risky adventure, retracing a Victorian expedition to cross Australia which ended in death. Ben and James will be following in the footsteps of Burke and Wills, an Englishman and an Irishman who travelled from Melbourne up through the centre of the country to its north coast 150 years ago. The pair will start the expedition in October and are hoping to complete the trip in 9 weeks, almost 3 months more quickly than the fastest time to date.

Many assumed the company's ethical stance would slowly be wrung out by the Unilever Corporation after they acquired the company in 2000. It seems Unilever decided it was wise to let the brand continue its focus on social responsibilty. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were in London to announce plans to make Ben & Jerry's fully Fairtrade compliant in all its European products by the end of 2011, followed by the rest of the world in 2013.

The Winter Olympics in Vancouver 12th February 2010The 8 hour time difference between the UK and Vancouver means that tonight's opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics doesn't get underway until the early hours of tomorrow morning. Kevin McCloud says the slums of Mumbai could teach the UK alot about social sustainabilty 14th January 2010Britain should focus less on building environmentally friendly housing and more on providing “happy” places to live, according to Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud. The presenter journeyed to the Dharavi slum in Mumbai after hearing claims that it might hold some answers to the problems facing our cities. Kevin lived, slept, worked and ate in the slum where disease is rife and it is estimated that there is one lavatory for every 1,400 residents. Kevin believes that the British Government shouldn't worry so much about creating eco-towns, but instead focus on the social aspect of housing, how to make people happier.

Richard Noble's Bloodhound supercar set to power its way to 1000mph 25th November 2009Work has begun on building a super-fast car to smash all previous records and reach the breathtaking speed of 1,000mph. The supercar is part of the Bloodhound project, an initiative proposed by Lord Drayson in a bid to inspire the next generation of engineers. Kirsty Moore is the first woman pilot to train with the RAF's Arrows display team 12th November 2009The Red Arrows have made history by taking on their first ever female pilot. Kirsty Moore will join the Red Arrows, based in Lincolnshire, next season - which starts in 2010. The RAF said that until now no female fast-jet pilot had advanced far enough in their flying career to join the display team. Pen Hadow warns that the Arctic will be ice-free within a decade 16th October 2009The findings of the Catlins Arctic Survey analysed by Cambridge University and the WWF have shown that the Arctic is melting at such a rate that it could be almost ice free within 10 years. The results of the expedition will be presented to a UN meeting in Copenhagen in December as further evidence that the world must reduce carbon emissions in order to prevent the Arctic melting at an even faster rate. Pen's expedition last winter, was blighted by technical problems, and after the high tech radar equipment to measure the ice thickness failed after the first few days, they were forced to continue with a simple ice drill.

Lewis Gordon Pugh takes his global warming campaign to Everest 28th September 2009The adventurer, environmentalist and speaker, Lewis Gordon Pugh has announced that his latest intrepid expedition will be to swim across a glacial lake on Mount Everest to highlight the dangers of climate change. The thrill of adventure drives people do some quite remarkable things. Throw in a campaign and you have some people who will go to extremes to make sure their campaign is heard. Lewis Gordon Pugh, the swimmer who is going to dive into melted ice on Everest to highlight climate change, is one of these people. Lewis plans to swim under the summit of Mount Everest. Something nobody has ever done before. He is hopimg to draw further attention to the cause he swam accross a patch of open sea at the North Pole for, ahead of a conference in December in Copenhagen on replacing the 1997 Kyoto protocol on reducing greenhouse gases.
Southeastern trains to be named after top British athletes 25th September 2009Train operator Southeastern has renamed 12 of its high-speed trains after British Olympic and Paralympic medallists, including Sebastian Coe, Daley Thompson and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson. The rebranding, an unofficial association with London 2012, also sees trains named after Dame Kelly Holmes, Steve Backley, Sir Steve Redgrave, Rebecca Adlington, Sir Chris Hoy, Ben Ainslie, Duncan Goodhew, Katherine Grainger and Jamie Staff. The trains were unveiled at a special ceremony in Ashford by Jamie Staff, a member of the British cycling sprint team that won the gold medal at last year's Olympics in Beijing, under the banner of "Britain's Fastest" for 12 of Southestern's new javelin trains.
James May's Lego house to be demolished 23rd September 2009After creating the world's first Lego house using 3.2 million Lego bricks and 100 volunteers, Top Gear presenter James May has been told that the house must be demolished. After plans for Legoland, Windsor to buy the house fell through, a facebook group was created to find a buyer for the house. With estimated costs of £50,000 to dismantle and rebuild the house, no one has claimed the house and it will be dismantled this morning.

Top Chefs to Cook for Wounded War Heroes 18th September 2009Paul Gayler, Chef de Cuisine at The Lanesborough has created the event Chefs for Heroes to raise money for the charity Help for Heroes. Paul will lead a team of top chefs as they cook a five course meal to raise funds for troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Poet, Tim Key named comedy king at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards 3rd September 2009Performance poet and stand-up comedian Tim Key has won the Edinburgh Comedy Awards at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The judges scrutinised over 400 other acts at the festival, before choosing Tim as the winner. Jonny Sweet, who is due to play a young David Cameron in a forthcoming More4 docudrama won the best newcomer award. The panel prize went to Peter Buckley Hill's Free Fringe, which was judged to have embodied the spirit of the festival.
Co founder of Green & Blacks, Craig Sams is using charcoal to fight climate change 2nd September 2009The entrepreneur, speaker who with Jo Fairley founded Green & Black's organic chocolate, has created a biochar business in a bid to combat climate change. The process involves taking waste from agriculture and fishing and turning it into charcoal by roasting it in a low-oxygen atmosphere. The process turns waste into raw carbon, which can then be used to fertilise the soil. Dan Morrell, a former music promoter and entrepreneur who co founded the company, Carbon Gold with Craig said that the technology had huge promise but needed to be proved in a large scale trial. The company's first deal with the government of the Maldives should provide the opportunity to do this.

Major Phil Packer finishes the London Marathon 11th May 2009A soldier who was told by doctors that he would never walk again has finished the London Marathon 13 days after he started the 26.2 mile course. Major Phil Packer was badly injured in a rocket attack in Basra last February, walked two miles each day on crutches to raise funds for the soldiers' charity, Help For Heroes. On saturday, Phil was presented with his finisher's medal by Sir Steve Redgrave.
Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton completes the Namibian Ultra Marathon 8th May 200925 year old Helen Skelton has recently completed the Namibian Ultra Marathon hailed as one of the toughest races in the world. Helen had to run all 78 miles, the equivalent of three normal marathons in one day as part of a Blue Peter Challenge. She experienced temperatures of up to 45 degrees centigrade in the race that took her 23 hours and 50 minutes to complete. She is only the second woman ever to complete the race, having only ever taken part in fun runs before she started her training.
