Alex Thomson Biography

Alex Thomson is a familiar figure in British TV news as both an award-winning correspondent and anchor on ITN's Channel 4 News. He combines reporting on major stories and war coverage with his studio presenting role on Channel 4's in-depth nightly news. Alex is in demand both as a keynote speaker and facilitator for business and policy conferences.

Background and career

Previously a BBC reporter, Alex regularly fronts full-length current affairs documentaries for Channel 4's Dispatches, and comments on news and media issues in national press and magazines.
He was the Channel Four News correspondent in the Gulf States during the 1991 war, after which he wrote Smokescreen - an acclaimed account of media-military relations. Alex’s travel book about India, published in 1985, is an account of his bicycle journey from the north to the south of the country.

As news anchor and frontline war correspondent for 20 years, Alex is in the unique position of being able to talk about what it is really like working in live news - both in the studio and in the field. “This world relies completely on the odd confluence of human beings with technology and every night it is little short of a miracle that things look as glitch free as they do!” Alex’s anecdotes about life inside live TV news - on the road and in the studio – are enlightening and often uproarious!

Honorary Fellow of Falmouth College of Journalism; external examiner at Cardiff Journalism School and Advisory Committee Member of the Rory Peck Trust – Alex’s experience is prolific.

Alex has been the recipient of countless journalism awards, including Royal Television Society awards; New York Film and TV Awards; BAFTA Awards; Amnesty International Press Awards and One World Broadcasting Trust Awards.

Alex also chairs conferences and seminars and is a highly skilled conference facilitator and after dinner speaker. He has a wealth of experience hosting events and award ceremonies, both at home and abroad.
