The record temperatures forecasted did not materialise yesterday and the light rain proved to be perfect conditions for the 36,000 runners of the 2010 Virgin London Marathon.
The upset of the day for Great Britain was Maria Yamauchi not achieving the top spot despite being tipped to win. It is likely that the volcanic ash and Maria's 6-day journey back to the UK took it's toll.
The first across the finishing line was the Russian runner Liliya Shobukhova in 2hrs 22mins - smashing her personal best for the event.
The founder of Virgin, Sir Richard Branson who sponsored the event for the first time this year, ran the race in 5hrs 02min 24sec dressed as a butterfly.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson tweeted how delighted he was that London had put on such a successful and well run event which bodes well for 2012.
